LMR Athletics

The weather may have been gusty, but for many of our participants, the regional athletics meet was a breeze!

Thirty-five students proudly represented our college at the LMR Athletics held at Lar Birpa Athletics Complex in Flora Hill last Thursday.

Despite facing fierce competition from schools across the Loddon Malle Region, our students excelled in a range of track and field events, with some even breaking regional records!

In a dominant display of performance, St Joseph's College amassed 19 gold, 16 silver, and 10 bronze medals on the medal tally.

Congratulations to all who participated and represented our school so impeccably.

For many of our students, this meet served as a stepping stone towards the upcoming State Track and Field Championships, which will be held on Monday 20 October at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

We wish you the best of luck!

Girls Super 8s Cricket

Our Intermediate girls started off the day well with a big win in the first game 144 to 97 against Nathalia Secondary College. In the second game against St Augustines the girls continued their winning form hitting another big score, taking a number of wickets and getting the win. In the third and final game against SMOTA the girls were slow to get into it but a hat trick by fill in Mia Giede towards the end of the game lifted the girls and helped us secure the win 144 to 83. Best players were Kenzie Johnstone, Kate Head and Hannah Finn who were great all rounders – hitting big shots, taking wickets and catches. The girls won the day overall and had a lot of fun.

Our Year 7 girls had a great day, starting off with a loss but chasing it with two wins, winning our last game by 85 points. This put us up to win the day but sadly it come down to points scored for the day and we lost by 1 run. Emma Moyle stood out with her amazing skills and team direction, as well as Jolie Masters who encouraged every player on our team. Overall an impressive effort by our girls.

Our Year 8 girls started off with a great win against St Augs, winning by a 56 run margin. We scored 146 and St Augs only managed 90 runs. We played Rochester in the 2nd game who managed to score freely and then bundled us out to a 56 run victory margin. We got back to our winning ways against Smota who we scored 134 runs against and they only managed 101. Shila Cleveland shined with the ball, Sarah Head and Lucy Smith stood out with the bat, and it was a great effort all round from all the girls.

LMR Intermediate Boys and Girls Cricket

On Tuesday our Intermediate Boys and Girls Cricket teams headed to Bendigo to compete in the LMR cricket competition.

Our boys fielded first against CMC and picked up 2 early wickets. We struggled to hold them after that though and they ended up scoring 104 in their 14 overs. We had a shaky start and never managed to build up any momentum despite a valiant effort from Ben Henson with a well fought 32 runs. We ended up with 74 losing by 30 runs.

In our 2nd match against Kerang our bowlers skittled through their line to restrict them to 72 runs with Bodhi Teasdale-Dohnt finishing with 2-10 off his 3 overs. Ben Henson and Liam Beasly starred with 43 and 12 respectively and powered us to a swift victory inside 6 overs.

Our last match against Mildura which was reduced to a 10 over match had our bowlers all bowl an over each and kept Mildura to just 49 runs. Charlie McIntyre anchored the innings with a quickfire 33 not out to secure our 2nd win of the day. Though we missed out on going through to the next stage, the boys played with pride and represented the school very well.

Our girls played their one and only game against Caruso College Bendigo. They fielded first and started the game well with Claire Dridan taking the first wicket on the second ball of the first over. They continued this good form taking a wicket in nearly every over to get Caruso all out for 34 after 11 overs. They went into the batting innings full of confidence but lost a number of wickets early and from some good bowling from Caruso were unable to put many runs on the board. At one stage they were 6 out for 6 runs. It wasn’t until the second half of the innings that we found some momentum with some solid and consistent hitting from Kenzie Johnstone and Kate Head. The girls found themselves back in the game and with one over to go needed 5 runs off 6 balls. Kate Head hit 3 runs early in the over and with one ball to come needed one run to draw. The ball was misfielded by the keeper and with some desperation Kate and partner Georgia ran, only to have Kate just run out. The girls finished on 9 for 33. The standout was Kenzie Johnstone who took 5 wickets and made our largest score of 12 runs. The girls demonstrated great sportsmanship all day, spirit to comeback, and some great teamwork in the field. They should be proud of their efforts.

Year 8 Boys Cricket - Campaspe

Our Year 8 boys showed plenty of commitment and fight at the Campaspe Cricket Competition last week.

In the first game against SMOTA, Taj Maddox top-scored with a determined 31 runs as we posted 58. Despite the bowlers’ best efforts, we went down by 9 wickets.

In the second match against St Augustine’s, Hamish Teasdale also top-scored with 31, helping us reach 68. Once again, our bowlers shared the load, but we fell short by 7 wickets.

While the results didn’t go our way, the team played with great spirit and resilience right to the end.

Thanks to our coaches Mr Regis Chakabva and Mr Tom Dicker.

Year 7 Boys Cricket - Campaspe

Late last term, St Joseph’s College was fortunate enough to take two Year 7 teams to the Campaspe Cricket competition, giving more of our students the opportunity to represent the school on the big stage.

Game 1: SJC 1 v SJC 2

In the opening match, it was St Joseph’s versus St Joseph’s. Brenton McKenner batted with confidence to set up the innings, while Ged Canham tore through the opposition with some outstanding bowling taking multiple wickets.

Kingy produced what can only be described as the “spinning ball of the century,” leaving the crowd in disbelief. Team 1 came away with a comprehensive victory.

Game 2: SJC 2 v St Augustine’s - Battle for 3 v 4

Our second fixture was a hard-fought battle against St Augs. Murphy Hazelman and Aarav Bhatia showed great determination with the bat, while Tom Arthurson and Angus Henderson provided stability at the crease. In the field, Blake Henshall held onto a couple of sharp catches, Jaxon Keys bowled with excellent control, and Blake Shandley kept superbly all day, not letting a single run slip by. Unfortunately we lost our second game in the last over needing 4 runs to win.

The Final: SJC 1 v Rochy

The grand final proved to be a thrilling contest. Tom  (17), Tighe Teasdale (9), and Brenton (10) led the way with the bat. With the ball, Tighe was unstoppable, claiming remarkable figures of 4 for 4 off 4 overs. The match went down to the wire, but in the final over, Tom held his nerve and bowled brilliantly to secure victory with three balls to spare. It was a fantastic day of cricket, showcasing not only the talent but also the teamwork of our Year 7 students.

Congratulations to all players for representing St Joes with pride. We especially thank Mr Chakabva and Cody Walker for their efforts on the day.
