Indigenous Education

Reconciliation Week

Last week, it was Reconciliation Week. On the first day, we said a prayer about Reconciliation week called “the Aboriginal Our Father”. On the second day, we held a fire carrier ceremony, where we became proper fire carriers. The school fire carriers were given special badges that represent their commitment to the original custodians of this land. On Wednesday, we did a fundraiser for the opening of the doors foundation by serving Milo, Chocolate Crackle, and Honey Joys, and we also made damper with honey served on top. That was about it. Thank you for reading this paragraph on our splendid experience of reconciliation week.

FIRE Carriers Commissioning

During Reconciliation Week, we gathered by the FIRE to commission our Grade 6 students as FIRE Carrier Leaders. This also involved commissioning James and Darcy to be our FIRE Carrier Leaders. St Joseph's joined the FIRE Carrier Program 2 years ago.

The aim of the FIRE (Friends Igniting Reconciliation through Education) Carrier Project is to promote respect, fairness and inclusion for Aboriginal people.

To be a FIRE Carrier is to exercise an important leadership role in the school community. FIRE carriers are students and teachers that share a passion for learning about Aboriginal culture and history and are committed to sharing this knowledge and promoting reconciliation within and beyond the school community.

F/1/2 Art

The F/1/2 Students have been comparing the Indigenous Creators to our God. They made connections by talking about how the world was created and how the watch over us. The F/1/2's looked at the stories of the Rainbow Serpent and Bunjil the Eagle. They created their own Rainbow Serpents by using clay and used Natural Materials to make Bunjil the Eagle.

The F/1/2's also created a map of Australia using natural materials on our wonderful bushland.

Solid Rock

The Theme Song for Reconciliation Week is Solid Rock. In Friendship Groups, we have been making up dance moves to make our very own music video! We are looking forward to sharing the video with you, next week!
