From the library

Another exciting term in the library! How busy we have been!

Early Stage One have continued to enjoy developing their library skills by borrowing and browsing a range of books. They also participated in the reading of The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell, as part of National Simultaneous Storytime 2025. Students have been working on increasing their vocabulary by learning some new clever words from the text.

Stage One also participated in reading The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel and Danny Snell, as part of National Simultaneous Storytime 2025. As well as increasing their vocabulary, students have also discussed the meaning behind a valuable message from the text “home is everywhere”. Students were asked where they are when they most feel at home.

Home is… when I am with my mum going to Tamworth to see Nan. Ziya S1S

Home is….when I am with my dog. Piper S1F

Home is….when I am with my chickens. Paddy S1F

Home is….when I am out in the bush. Harrison S1I

Home is….when I am in my backyard. Patrick S1M

Stage Two students are about to begin some research leading up to Ben Venue NAIDOC Week celebrations in Week 10. They will begin by developing their research skills, using both books and the Internet to research and create a presentation on a chosen reptile. Inspiration will come from a fantastic new resource Caution! This Book Contains Deadly Reptiles by Corey Tutt. Sharing knowledge from 20 different First Nations, Caution! This Book Contains Deadly Reptiles is a reptile book unlike any we’ve seen before. For each reptile featured, students will discover its name in a First Language, plus learn about favourite feeds, breeding and babies, conservation, predators and prey, and most importantly, what makes that reptile deadly (in a good way). There are also descriptions of the landscapes where you can spot these reptiles, and Ben Williams' colourful illustrations will be inspiration for an art activity to support our presentations.

Stage Three began the term discussing the importance of reading as a lifelong skill. Students have been engaged in learning how to choose a “good fit book” to read for an increasing period of time. Building our reading stamina has opened Stage 3 up to some friendly competition as to which class can read uninterrupted for the longest period of time. S3O currently hold the record with a time of 16 minutes. As part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations, Stage 3 students will continue to develop their research skills by researching a significant First Australian and developing a poster based on their research.

A further reminder to please support your child to be able to borrow books from the library by sending them in on their library day with a suitable library bag. Ben Venue has library bags available for purchase from the front office, however these are not mandatory. Any good quality material or plastic coated bag will be fine. A pillowcase is even a great option! It is essential for the protection of the books inside that library bags are not paper bags or bags with holes in them. Please refer to the below table if you are not aware of which day your child visits the library.

Library closed

As well as during your child's regular borrowing time, the library is also open Monday - Thursday before school and at lunchtimes. Whilst our mornings are usually for quiet reading, drawing and colouring and borrowing, lunchtimes offer a variety of activities.

Congratulations to Hannah Kurian in S3M who was the lucky winner in our recent competition to win a copy of The Truck Cat as part of our National Simultaneous Storytime activities this year.

Happy reading!
