NATIONAL CAREERS WEEKS
NATIONAL CAREERS WEEK
Last week was National Careers Week and to celebrate we ran a series of events, activities, competitions and courses at Mortlake College.
COURSES
Our Year 7/8s kicked off the week with a CPR course where they learnt the fundamentals of resuscitation. And over 20 students from our year 9-12 cohort rounded out the week with an accredited Food Handlers Course on Friday. Well done to all these students for broadening their skill sets and adding another notch on their career tool belts!
COMPETITIONS
We ran a series of lunchtime career competitions with students attempting to match careers with salaries and determine which jobs are growing or declining over the next 5 years. It was great to see the students take some time to think about careers (the chocolate frog incentives might have helped) and broaden their knowledge. Congratulations to Isabella Pickford, Molly Goddard, Spencer Sagnol and Olivia Schuuring for the competitions they won!
GUEST SPEAKERS
Our year 10-12s heard from the Warrnambool & Moyne Young Business Leaders program organisers – inspiring all students to consider applying for the program to help build and grow a business idea they might have.
Our year 12s also heard from Jacob from the YouThrive organisation who talked about their free mentor program as well as a range of Trade and University scholarships up for grabs.
Gary Rohan, ex AFL player, came and spoke to a selection of our year 9 & 10s about careers in elite sport, his own career journey and what it’s like to be an elite athlete. He even brought his AFL premiership medal with him for the students to check out.
ACTIVITIES
Deakin University were onsite on Tuesday and hosted a mini expo, talking with students about courses and pathways and giving out a few freebies!
On Thursday, the Neil Porter Legacy (NPL) ran an incredible Trades Taster Day for our year 7 & 8 students, as well as 7 & 8s from Hawkesdale College. There were 18 exhibitors, including builders, plasterers, plumbers, electricians, Clarke’s Pies, Acciona, Powercor, Parks Victoria, WVLX, Dairy Australia, Mortlake Police, Corangamite Shire, Ambulance Victoria, SWTAFE and their incredible Ag truck. Students got to go to 4 different exhibitors and learn a hands-on skill from each business/industry. A massive thank you to all the exhibitors and the NPL for helping organise the day!
