What is an Upstander?

An Upstander is:

  • A Year 5 student who learns how to stand up against unkind behaviour and helps teach others across the school community.
  • A leader who leads by example both in and out of the classroom.
  • A role model who promotes kindness, inclusion, and respect.
  • Someone who speaks up when needed.
  • A student who helps turn negative experiences into positive ones.

As part of the program, we proudly collaborate with Sandringham East Primary School, Beaumaris Primary School, Sandringham Primary School, Brighton Beach Primary School, and Bayside City Council. Together, we select an annual theme to guide our initiatives.

This year’s theme is:“Words Are Muscles – Use Them to Lift!”It highlights the power of words and focuses on building strong, respectful communication among students.

Our Upstanders will participate in a forum day, share their learning with the wider community, and lead workshops to bring their message to life within the school.

Congratulations again to our newly selected Year 5 Upstanders. We look forward to seeing the positive impact you will make in our school community this year!

What we discovered

Kids Helpline is very helpful.  It teaches you many ways to calm yourself down.  They suggested taking deep breaths and tracing your hand with your fingers.  They were rally kind by letting us tell our answers.  They told us some ideas such as getting some exercise and playing soccer or basketball.  All it takes is to get outside, draw or do anything to take your mind off something that is making you sad or some other problem .
