Library News
We will be celebrating Book Week from Thursday 15th- Wednesday 21st August (Week 4 and 5). During this time we will have a number of activities and events taking place for the students including our fabulous Book Week Parade! Please see below for information.
Book Week Parade (K-10)
When: 9.15am FRIDAY 16th August. Parents and friends are very welcome to attend.
What: Students are encouraged to dress up as a book character. There are many websites with ideas for easy book week costumes. Each grade will have two winners.
Students’ costumes will be judged on the following criteria:
- Is the costume accompanied with the book (or a photocopy of the book cover)?
- Is the costume from a book?
- Creativity – Was the costume made creatively, colourfully, and does it show personality?
- Originality – Does the costume stand out from the rest?
- Effort – Did the costume take time and effort?
- Authenticity – How accurate and thorough is the costume?
Why: To immerse students in books and book characters and to celebrate the conclusion of Book Week.
Scholastic Book Fair
When: Thursday 15th August - Wednesday 21st August.
What: Our Scholastic Book Fair brings books, available for purchase right into our school. It’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.
Why: Reading for pleasure unlocks the power of information and imagination. It also helps children discover who they are.
How: The Book Fair will be held in the old Student Support rooms. It will be signposted. Each year we are sent 25-35 boxes of books for every kind of reader! They range in price from $4 - $25. Prior to the Book Fair officially opening students will have the opportunity to preview all the books for sale. They will receive a ‘Wish List’ form on which they can write any books they ‘wish’ they could purchase.
If you would like to purchase your child’s suggestions, you can either follow the instructions on the Wish List form to pay online, or visit the Book Fair. Book donations for our Library are always warmly accepted and appreciated. EFTPOS facilities will be available.
Bags Needed!
If you have any bags at home you don't need (plastic, paper, material) the Library could really use them! We need them for our Scholastic Book Fair! We also give them to students who have forgotten their library bag, as well as for Scholastic Book Club, to ensure the books stay safe.
SORA ebook recommendation
Sora is a free reading app that our diocese subscribes to. It helps students discover and enjoy leisure and classroom reading. With Sora, students can access digital materials and can filter e-books and audiobooks for any interest and reading level.
SORA is available anywhere on smartphones, tablets and desktops. All students have been taught how to access SORA.
There have been a couple of changes in reference to downloading the App onto devices. I have attached the new instructions below. Please let me know if you have any issues.
Important Note: Content is filtered for age appropriateness. Reading levels and age appropriateness factors are determined by publishing companies.
The following book suggestions come from the C.B.C.A (Children's Book Council of Australia) Shortlisted list. It is the perfect guide to share with young people. Compiled from critiques submitted by our expert judges, this document can aid children's discovery of good stories to read, a reported reason they give for not reading.
