Positive Behaviour for Learning

Lesson Plan: Transitioning Safely out to Play

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to: move out to playtime in a quiet, safe and respectful manner.

This will look like:

Lining up with your class ready to go outside for play

Students walking, keeping left and keeping quiet when moving through the corridors and on the stairs on their way outside

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour

Why is it important?

Holy Rosary School Values: Relationships, Respect, Resilience, Integrity, Kindness.

Holy Rosary School Expectations: Safety is our right. Learning is our responsibility. Respect is our way.

We all have the right to feel safe and be safe.  Walking eliminates to a large extent, accidents that occur at busy times like bell times.  Walking in and around the school buildings keeps us all safe.  It allows teachers to concentrate on the business of teaching and children on the business of learning.

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour

What would the behaviour look/sound like?

Examples

Packing lunch boxes away in bags when finished eating lunch/snack

sitting at table while waiting for the bell to go for outside

lining up in alphabetical order when my teacher tells us to

walking quietly and safely out to playtime

keeping left and keeping quiet while we walk out to play

keeping  my hands to myself while I walk out to play.

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

Leaving my lunchbox on my table or on top of the bag boxes

walking around the classroom when I’ve finished eating

Leaving the classroom as soon as the bell rings

running down the stairs or through the hallway

overtaking on the stairs

jumping stairs

sliding/skidding through the corridors

pushing others when lining up.
