STEM
Last week, junior classes explored different materials around our school. Students felt, tapped, described and recorded examples found in small and large items in various locations. We discussed why objects are made from these materials and whether the are natural or human-made.
In the senior classes, we have started exploring the role plastics play in our everyday life and the impact plastic materials have on our environment. Students shared prior knowledge and brainstormed the range of plastic items found around the home and school. We evaluated decomposition rates of different objects with careful consideration and shared estimations with reasoning. We were all shocked by the decomposition rates of different objects in marine environments....many guesses were centuries off the mark!
