Dear Parents
Anxiety can be such a debilitating part of a child’s life and often is not understood by some adults. Plenty of things can spark anxiety in kids. Big changes like starting a new school or moving houses can be a huge trigger. Bullying or social issues often play a role too. Family tensions, such as arguments or parental divorce, can also cause anxiety. A diagnosed illness can also be a trigger.
Even everyday pressures like academic expectations and performance anxiety during school tests can be tough. Genetics can also play a part—if a family member has anxiety, a child may be more prone to it as well.
To assist a child who is suffering or is challenged by anxiety there needs to be support, structure, and understanding.
Acknowledging the child's feelings without minimizing them goes a long way. Encourage the child to be open about how they are feeling, so they feel safe expressing their worries. Routines and boundaries can provide a sense of predictability, which can ease anxiety.
Giving the child strategies such as breathing techniques, mindfulness and relaxation routines can be helpful, even for kids. It is really important to seek professional support, like a child psychologist, who can provide additional strategies tailored to the child's needs.
Of course, self-care for the parents is vital, too. They need to be in a good headspace to support their child effectively. What do you think is the hardest part for parents in this situation?
Thank you and keep smiling
