Curriculum Day -  Monday 4th November

Melbourne Cup - Tuesday 5th November

Working Bee - Saturday  9th November

Welcome to Ivanhoe Primary School,

Dear community,

At reception we now have Compass ‘Kiosk’.

The Compass ‘Kiosk’  is an interactive, integrated information terminal used at IPS for ‘signing in and out’. The ‘Kiosk’, located at Reception, is a touch-screen unit that integrates seamlessly with the school’s system.

Sign in/out on "Kiosk" is required for: late arrival of students, leaving school during school hours and to log the details of visitors and volunteers.

Drop Off duty Of Care

REMINDER - Children must not be dropped off at school before 8.45am unless they are attending a school sanctioned program. Staff are not on duty before 8.45am. Siblings of children attending chess or any other before school program cannot be left unsupervised. Parents of children left unattended will be required to pick them up.

Read Write Inc

Read Write Inc. provides a structured and systematic approach to teaching literacy.

Here are Everly, Phoebe and James who completed a poster demonstrating their comprehension skills along with exploring water as a precious resource. They are justifiably proud of their work.

Bike Education and Road Safety

We are excited to inform you that Year 4 will be participating in the Bike Education Program as part of the Health and Physical Education curriculum. The 4-week program will be held on Mondays in term 4, weeks 6 - 9.

While the program is for Year 4, common sense and road safety is for everyone. If you are going to ride to and from school wear a helmet. Walk your bike in Ailsa Grove. Sadly, drivers are still using neighbours' driveways for u-turns so it is only a matter of time before someone is injured.

St Johns First Aid in Schools

On Wednesday 30th October, Foundation, Year 1, Year 3 and Year 5 classes participated in the St John First Aid Schools Program that teaches primary school children lifesaving skills to give them the confidence to act in an emergency. Students were engaged in age-appropriate hands-on activities to help them learn what to do in an emergency.

The St John First Aid in Schools Program is designed to educate children on how to assist in emergencies, whether at home, at school, or on the sports field. Since 2012, they have trained more than 1,000,000 school children around Australia in First Aid.  St John is committed to promoting the importance of First Aid in the community to build resilience and help save lives.

They  believe there is no better place to start than at school and we at IPS agree.

Grade 5/6 Art Show

The Grade 5/6 Art Show is fast approaching, and the students are getting very excited to see their work up on display on Tuesday November 12th. The official opening occurs on Tuesday afternoon. Save the date.

2025 Foundation Transition Visits

On Tuesday 29th October IPS held its second successful transition session for the 2025 Foundation children. It was wonderful to see them enter the classrooms and eagerly join in on all the fun activities. After playing, children listened to the story, ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and then created their own Hungry Caterpillar.  Parents also enjoyed the opportunity to have a cup or tea/coffee and chat with each.

It was great to see happy, engaged children in the foundation rooms, the current foundation students and their Grade 3 buddy classes having a great time whilst displaying all the school values that we strive for. Henry and Jude from Year 6 did a wonderful job of helping the little people with their activities.

Thanks to the Foundation Team for all their work on this, the Year 3 Team for being flexible and putting on a great show for their Foundation buddies, Emily and Francine for their help with the day, Rekha for doing the hard yards back in the office, the PFA reps running the afternoon tea, Jo K for managing the yard so effectively in the build-up, Pam for hosting the afternoon tea and anyone else I may have missed in the process.

Year 4 Camp

From all reports the Year 4s are having a wonderful time. Alexandra looks like an amazing camp experience.  Everything is really organised.  The students look to be having a great time. The smiles on the faces  tell the story. I am sure we'll hear / read all about their adventures on their return.

Year 6 Camp

Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

We understand that the cost of sending your child to Canberra Camp can be a considerable impost on family finances.  Unfortunately the Thia Chamber of Commerce is no longer able to sponsor our program so we will do our best to fund raise throughout the year to keep the costs to a minimum. The Canberra Tour directly supports student learning in the curriculum areas of democracy, civics and citizenship, governance and science (while being great fun). Below are several short videos from our recent Year 6 Camp.

Australian War Memorial / Museum

We visited the Australian War Memorial and took part in the wreath-laying ceremony at the feet of the unknown soldier. A very moving experience for all of us in this very solemn and respectful place.

Debating a bill in Parliament

At Parliament House students role play debating a bill regarding provisioning air conditioning in schools.

The Royal Thai Embassy

IPS was privillaged to visit the Royal Thai Embassy. An honour generally afforded to dignitaries and VIPS. The students gifted them a wonderful framed artwork as a token of our appreciation.

Questacon

At Questacon, students engaged with science, technology and innovation through interactive, relevant and fun experiences. Definitely a highlight for many students.

The Royal Australian Mint

IPS visited the Royal Australian Mint and learned, amongst other things the song that Aussies sang to help them understand the change to decimal currency. "Dollar Bill" and his catchy decimal currency conversion jingle (sung to the tune of the Australian folksong 'Click Go the Shears', with lyrics by Ted Roberts) were an instant hit.

A big thank you to the Year 6 staff and our three incredible parent helpers, Jeremy Yates, Natalie Campbell and Nick Smith. It could not happen without you.

13th November is the Year 6 Day of Democracy

Year 6 students have begun working on a topic based on Australian Democracy as part of their studies in the subject of Civics and Citizenship.

In week 6, Wednesday 13th November, all grades will have the opportunity to visit the Grade 6 students in the beehive building and be entertained and informed about topics including, Australian Prime Ministers, Australian Federation, Women in Parliament, Australian Institute of Sport, Parliament House, preferential voting and the how Canberra came to be our nation’s capital city. Following the school day on the 13th November 3:30pm to 5:00pm, we will be opening the doors for family and friends from the school community to also visit and enjoy the Grade 6 student projects.

On the Thursday 14th November, the Grade 6 students are looking forward to a visit from our local member of Parliament Kate Thwaites who will share her political journey dating back to her primary education.

Working Bee

The final Working Bee for 2024 is on November the 9th and we need your help.

Mr Bull will publish a list of tasks shortly for people to sign up to (I think repainting the ever popular four-square courts might make the list). Mrs Wright and I will run the BBQ.

*Does anyone have a Bobcat we can borrow to even the ground for a shed and move some concrete sleepers so we can secure bike racks at the bottom of our school?

SunSmart

Our Term 4 school Sunsmart Policy requires students to wear a hat outside during breaks, sport etc. We encourage students to apply sunscreen before school and reapply during the day. Students who aren’t following our instruction to be sunsmart were reminded this morning, that they would be sent to the designated shade area at the top of school. Your support from home is greatly appreciated.

Trivia Night & Auction a huge success!

The annual PFA run Trivia Night is always a fantastically fun community night! This one was the best yet. It was a full house. Tables were themed and prizes were awarded for best dressed!

The online auction was a huge success thanks to over 200 sponsor donations. Thank you to Cat Atkinson who worked so hard getting this event and the auction organised.  Cat found over 200 prizes that were either raffled or auctioned.

While there are still some expenses to be calculated, the combined monies raised totalled in excess of $15,000.  Some of which will fund 16 student leaders to attend the Melbourne Gripp Leadership Conference early next year.

The GRIP Student Leadership Conference is unique in that it concentrates specifically on training student leaders for their role as SCHOOL LEADERS. The style, topics, and content of this conference all focus on what the students can do RIGHT NOW. Their goal is that student leaders would leave the conference with a clear vision, a solid understanding and dozens of ideas for their time as a leader.

Please consider joining the PFA. Contact Katherine Chalke through the school office.

Finally...

The tragic death of a child killed during a school pick up at a local school this week must serve as a timely reminder of how important it is to be vigilant and exercise extreme caution when driving on the roads around our schools.

While we place reminders in our newsletter asking drivers to avoid making U-turns and using neighbours driveways to beat the traffic during drop off and pick up times, this message often goes unheeded.

While this accident is almost beyond comprehension. It must serve as a warning to all drivers that use the neighbouring streets to drop off and pick children, to be extra careful.

Stay safe everyone and enjoy the long weekend.
