SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Tennis

On Friday 1st November, BHS returned to the Ballarat Regional Tennis Centre with 3  teams

(Year 7 Boys, Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls) to the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Tennis competition. Typically, a very strong competition it meant that all of our teams had their work cut out for them to secure the victory.

The Year 8 Boys team had 4 matches against Emmanuel College (0-5 v 6-24), Edenhope College (5-21 v 1-17), Horsham College (2-18 v 4-20) & Trinity College (1-11 v 5-22). The boys managed to secure one win for the day and finished in 4th place.

The Year 7 Boys team had 3 matches against Emmanuel College (1-6 v 5-21), Horsham College (3-14 v 3-20) & Trinity College (1-9 v 5-28). Unfortunately, the boys couldn’t get a win on the board but got super close to defeating Horsham College. The team had finished in 3rd place.

Finally, the Year 8 Girls team had 3 matches against Holy Trinity Lutheran College (0-4 v 6-24), Trinity College (2-12 v 4-19) & Emmanuel College (0-3 v 6-24). Similar to the Year 7 Boys, the girls didn’t secure a win but had a great time out in the sun.

SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Basketball

On Thursday 7th November, BHS returned to the Selkirk Stadium Ballarat with 4 teams (Year 7 Boys, Year 7 Girls, Year 8 Boys and Year 8 Girls) for the SSV Greater Western Region Year 7 & 8 Basketball competitions. Winners of these events qualify for the SSV State Championships.

The Year 8 Boys competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Emmanuel College (36pts to 37pts) and Monivae College (55pts to 46pts). Horsham College, Trinity College & Mercy Regional College were drawn in the alternate pool. The narrow 1pt loss to Emmanuel College meant the Year 8 Boys couldn’t qualify for the Grand Final. Instead, they qualified for the consolation final for 3rd place against Trinity College which they went on to win 43pts to 35pts. The team finished in 3rd place for the competition.

The Year 8 Girls competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Trinity College (60pts to 11pts) and Emmanuel College (33pts to 23pts). Timboon P-12 College, Monivae College & Emmanuel College were drawn in the alternate pool. 2 wins secured the team a position in the Grand Final against Monivae College. The game went back and forth but Ballarat High School secured the win 54pts to 52pts! The Year 8 Girls were declared the SSV GWR Champions for 2024!

The Year 7 Boys competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Trinity College (51pts to 44pts) and Warracknabeal Secondary College (32pts to 42pts). Horsham College, Monivae College & Mercy Regional College were drawn in the alternate pool.

The Year 7 Boys team let a half time lead against Warracknabeal Secondary College slip and secured one win. This was enough to qualify for the consolation final against Monivae College which they lost in a tight affair 48pts to 50pts. The team finished in 4th place for the competition.

The Year 7 Girls competition had 6 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Trinity College (4pts to 60pts) and Brauer College (22pts to 50pts). Horsham College, Monivae College & Mercy Regional College were drawn in the alternate pool. It was a tough day for the Year 7 Girls with the competition being extremely strong this year. The girls certainly had a fun time regardless off the results.

The school also had 3 students umpire at the event which was a fantastic opportunity for our students to get involved in the SSV competition other than being a competing student.

SSV State Intermediate Girls Hockey Championships

On Wednesday 13th November, BHS took our Intermediate Girls Hockey team to the SSV State Intermediate Girls Hockey competition at the Footscray Hockey Club.

Having got a walkthrough at the Greater Western Region level, the team was very excited to get on the pitch and play a match! Head Coach Heather Kearle had been consistently training the girls for a large portion of the second semester, this even included guest coaching from Zac Smith of Hockey Ballarat on the brand new Prince of Wales Park surface!

Unfortunately, a few days out from the event Heather contracted COVID-19 and was unable to attend. BHS ex-student Emma Barber (2023) took the reins instead having competed in a few SSV State Hockey Championships in her time at the school.

The competition had 8 teams broken up into two pools. BHS drew Hume Anglican Grammar Mt Ridley (0 goals to 6 goals), Frankston High School (1 goal to 2 goals) and Charlton College (0 goals to 11 goals). Montmorency Secondary College, Blackburn High School, Alamada K-9 College, Western Heights College were drawn in the alternate pool.

BHS didn’t get a win on the board but they achieved their initial team objective of scoring a goal with Summer Kotek putting one in the net against Frankston High School. The team also had a memorable experience at the McDonalds stop on the way home when they waited an hour to get their food resulting in the bus returning at 6pm!

Regardless of the results the girls all had an amazing time and are looking forward to playing hockey again next year.

Students Involved:

Students: Jenna Archibald, Alex Gladman, Adrienne Harris, Mollie Hayes, Georgia Hodge, Sarah Hussein, Macey Kaletsch, Paige Kalisperis, Khushi Kaur, Summer Kotek, Evie Styles, Lana Wilson
