Digital Technology

Our DigiTech students (Year 9-11) took a memorable trip to the Science Gallery Melbourne on 22nd Oct 2024, blending hands-on technology with creative exploration. The day began with the Take Flight workshop, where students entered the exciting drone coding world. Using programming and geometry, they worked in teams to guide drones through a variety of complex flying patterns. This workshop demonstrated how coding, math, and technology come together while showing real-world applications of drones in fields like agriculture, logistics, and emergency response. It was a fun challenge that allowed students to put their coding skills to the test while learning the practical impact of technology.

The adventure continued with a visit to the SCI-FI exhibition, a captivating showcase of how science fiction intersects with ancient philosophies and futuristic technology. Students explored how digital innovation is reflected in the exhibition's visions of alternate worlds and advanced technology. They engaged in a scavenger hunt that revealed the deep connections between traditional storytelling and modern digital tools, highlighting how technology like coding, artificial intelligence, and virtual reality could bring age-old myths to life in new and exciting ways.

One of the highlights was the "Draw Your Demons" activity, where students expressed their worries and challenges through words and art, capturing their thoughts and creatively releasing them. This activity brought a reflective end to the day, allowing students to unwind and explore the emotional side of creativity.

The excursion was a perfect blend of digital exploration and cultural storytelling, showing students how DigiTech concepts are not just confined to coding but also shape the way we imagine and interact with the world around us.

Victorian Coding Challenge: Year 9 DigiTech Students Represent McClelland College

On Friday, October 25th, two Year 9 DigiTech students, Arif Alvi and Asher Thomas, had the exciting opportunity to represent McClelland College at the Victorian Coding Challenge (VCC) in Docklands. This is the first year McClelland has participated in this prestigious event hosted by the Mathematical Association of Victoria, and we couldn’t be prouder of our students' achievements.

The Victorian Coding Challenge is a state-wide competition that brings together students across Victoria to showcase their programming, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. In this face-to-face event, students compete in pairs, tackling coding challenges and games. The day was packed with fun, friendly competition, and plenty of excitement as students faced off against some of the best young coders in the state.

Asher shared some insights from the day:

“I recently attended the Victorian Coding Challenge with Arif and Ms. Nellie in Melbourne. This event brought students from schools around Victoria together to use their problem-solving, programming, and teamwork skills. The part I enjoyed most was the Agent Challenge, where you had to program a bot to play in a game for you. Arif and I came 4th in that challenge. The event really got me thinking about the problem-solving aspect, and I had a fantastic day in the city. I would love to go again—next time, with a focus on honing my problem-solving skills.”

We look forward to seeing where this passion for coding takes Arif, Asher, and the rest of our DigiTech students in future challenges! Congratulations to both of them for representing McClelland with such dedication and enthusiasm.
