Finding Nemo Jr: still time for tickets!

Girton Grammar’s Junior School students are eagerly preparing to remind us all why fish are friends (not food!) as they bring Disney–Pixar classic Finding Nemo to life.

Over three performance nights from 22 to 24 October, around 170 students from Years 2, 4 and 6 will fill Bendigo’s Capital Theatre with the vibrant colours and underwater magic of the Great Barrier Reef.

Director Mrs Lucy Butler-Rees said the story’s universal appeal made it the perfect choice for this year’s Junior School Production: “Everybody loves Finding Nemo! How could you not? It makes you feel happy, sad and bewildered – and that’s just the first scene!”

Beyond the dazzling costumes, ensemble dances and enchanting ballads, the production centres on a thrilling journey of resilience and self-discovery.

“It’s a beautiful story of a young character bravely facing their fears and overcoming immense challenges, which is very powerful and moving,” Mrs Butler-Rees said.

“The theme of friendship also shines through, as the characters support each other during the most trying moments. It has provided a wonderful example of true friendship that has really resonated with our students.”

Throughout the rehearsal process, students have embraced the chance to learn new songs, immerse themselves in costumes and makeup, and strengthen their bonds with classmates.

“It’s been amazing to see them step outside their comfort zones and thrive, as they memorise lines, learn choreography and the tricky bit … balancing fun with focus during rehearsals,” Mrs Butler-Rees added.

For Year 6 student and Junior School Captain Zororo Tamangani, playing the title role of Nemo has provided a valuable opportunity to extend his leadership skills as he, like Nemo, ventures into uncharted waters.

“My emotions are a complicated combination of excitement and nervousness before I go on stage,” he said. “I sometimes worry about what could go wrong, but when it’s my time to perform, I relax myself, let all my hard work and practice take over, and I become confident. From that point, I don’t look back.”

Mrs Butler-Rees expressed her gratitude to the dedicated team of parents and staff who have helped to bring her underwater vision to life.

“Whether it is parents helping with set construction or talented staff members waving their magic wand to choreograph underwater coral dancers, everyone has had their part to play.”

Finding Nemo Jr will run from 22 to 24 October at 7pm at The Capital, Bendigo. Tickets are now available via gotix.
