Musician and Composer of the Year
The evening of Monday 15 October saw Girton’s Black Box Theatre reverberate with incredible performances for the annual Musician and Composer of the Year competition. The evening was a testament to Girton’s music program, with high-quality performances and student compositions across a range of instruments, disciplines and genres.
With just one point difference between first and second place, Year 12 student Amelie Woodward was awarded Musician of the Year with her alto saxophone performance of 'Strange Times'. Year 11 student Benjamin Lim won Composer of the Year with his genre-spanning composition 'Brown Gummy Bear', a title born from the sentiment that you don’t know if you’ll like something until you try it.
While there were many highlights during the concert, the Girton Symphony Orchestra’s powerful performance of Year 11 student Daniel Lichnovsky’s composition 'Fallen Lotus' was particularly impressive. We congratulate all the student musicians and composers who participated and look forward to following their musical journey.
ArtFest donations go to Running Water Project
Donations received from this year's ArtFest are supporting the Running Water Project, with Girton's contribution funding the construction of a Menstrual Health Management (MHM) toilet block at Balang High School in Kampong Thom.
The Running Water Project is about to start constructing a block of four MHM toilets and a block of nine urinals. The below image shows a similar set of MHM toilets recently constructed at another high school. These essential facilities will offer girls the privacy and access to running water they need to attend school during their menstrual cycle.
