Year 1 News

On Wednesday 12th November all of the Year 1 students visited the Melbourne Museum to learn about the land that we call home.

We visited the Melbourne Story exhibition to learn about the history of Melbourne and what it used to be like in the olden days. The map at the front at the exhibition showed us how Melbourne has grown and changed over time. We also got to sit in an old movie theatre and on an old roller coaster carriage.

In the First People’s Gallery we learnt about Aboriginal culture, traditions and how they care for the land. We explored the map of different Victorian language groups and learnt that there are over 35 different groups. Our favourite part was watching the beautiful story of Bunjil, the wedge-tailed eagle spirit who created our land. We were interested in the patterns and stories in the possum skin cloaks and used our imagination to figure out what they might mean. The emu feather skirt and the eel traps were both really cool to learn about how Indigenous People use the land and animals sustainably.

In the Forest Gallery we explored Victoria’s mountain landscapes and the plants and animals that live in that environment. We were really excited by the satin bowerbird nest, the stick insects and the blue tongue lizards. The Indigenous story of how the lakes and rivers were formed in Victoria was interesting.

The other part of the museum we saw was the Milari Garden Walk. When we were walking around we had to find 3 plants that you can eat for food and 3 plants that you can use for medicine. Some plants' flowers can be ground down to make flour and other tree bark can be used to make fishing wire! In 1MK the students were lucky enough to be there at the time when the eels and turtles were being fed. Did you know that eels and turtles eat a mix of cockroaches, crickets, grasshoppers, corn, apples and cat food?

All of these experiences at the museum helped to support our classroom learning about how our land is important and we need to respect its past and protect its future. If we stop, listen and observe the land and animals we will find that mother nature is talking to us all the time and telling us how to care for our planet.

Sports Incursion

Today we had a sports incursion run by Proactive. The activities were water activities, mini obstacle course, Jenga, basketball, archery, earth ball races and tug of war. My favourite activities are archery and earth ball races. I liked archery because it was always exciting to see if I was going to get a bulls eye. But that never happened to me! I liked the earth ball races because pushing such a big ball along was extremely challenging. It was extra fun when I got to roll the earth ball with a partner. Today was the best day.

Today we had a sports incursion, my favourite activity was archery and the mini basketball. The archery was very fun, I got 2 sixes and one 8. The basketball was even better, I was surprised that I did not miss a shot.

What we did this morning was like no other. There were different agility activities that we did. The school was set up with inflatable courses that you had to run though while collecting beanbags. Also we had to knock balls of cones with mighty water guns. There were big soccer balls you had to roll, a big basketball hoop, but my favourite was the archery. You get a bow, arrow and a target! There are also different amounts of points for different sections on the target. It was the best.

Victorian Primary School State Athletics Championships

On Thursday, 6th November, Newport Lakes PS had five students compete in the Victorian Primary School State Athletics Championships which is the highest level of competition in the state.

Our students qualified for these championships after finishing first or second in multiple other athletics events throughout the year.

Angus G qualified for the final in both of his individual events where he finished 8th in 100m and 4th in the 200m. It is truly an incredible effort for Angus to be in the top 8 fastest sprinters for his age in Victoria in both events.

Angus also substituted in for Teddy N who was on a family holiday, to compete in the 4 x 100m 11-year-old boys’ relay. Ibrahim A, Spencer C and Henry L were the other members of the relay team that did amazingly well all year and finished as the 11th fastest relay team in the state for 2026.

We are all extremely proud of the efforts and achievements of our students and wish them all the very best in their future sporting endeavours.
