Interstate and Overseas Study – Pros, Cons and FAQs

Many students may be interested in overseas and/or interstate study.

Study Interstate

Studying interstate is an excellent option. Scholarships are available and often students can more easily access very popular courses such as Medicine and Dentistry, that may be just out of reach for some students in Victoria due to the ATAR requirements.

Many students who have studied interstate have matured far more quickly than students living at home. They develop great independence and acquire life skills that equip them for future challenges and graduate interviews.

Most frequent asked questions by students and parents/carers:

How hard is it to find accommodation? How much does it cost?

University websites offer a lot of accommodation information. Costs can vary according to whether students want their own room or a shared room. Students can live on campus or off campus.

Off campus accommodation is generally cheaper and universities have options they can recommend as safe for young people.

When students study interstate, can they still access financial support from the government?

Yes. Students who study interstate can access CSP (Commonwealth Supported Place) places. They may even be eligible for some additional living away from home allowance from the government.

Are students safe if they stay on campus in another state?

Yes, students are generally safe staying in on-campus accommodation in another state, as residential colleges offer security patrols, secure environments with facilities specifically for enrolled students.

However, students must still take personal responsibility for their safety by being aware of their surroundings, protecting valuables, utilizing campus resources, and programming emergency numbers into their phones.

Can students who study interstate easily find part-time work?

All university students should have part-time employment. Universities in all states help students find part-time employment.

Is it hard for students to make friends interstate?

Students who study interstate often make friends more quickly. Universities look after interstate students and organise many social activities where students quickly form great friendships.

What happens if a student is unhappy studying away from home?

Students should simultaneously apply for courses in Victoria and defer their Victorian offer. If they are unhappy interstate, the Victorian offer is there for them.

Is it costly to study interstate?

Yes, studying interstate in Australia can be costly, not just due to potential travel and relocation expenses, but also because the cost of living, particularly in major cities like Sydney is high. The total cost includes tuition fees, which vary by course and institution, as well as expenses for living, Health Cover, textbooks, and other miscellaneous costs.

Study Overseas

Studying overseas is an unforgettable experience offering a wide range of benefits – experience new cultures, develop valuable skills and prepare for a global future.

Reasons to study overseas

Whether you are looking to travel solo for the first time and gain some independence, or you want to develop that competitive edge in your chosen industry, studying overseas can be life changing.  The benefits include:

  • Personal Growth
  • Gain Experience
  • Career Development
  • Academic Opportunities

When and where to travel

Picking when and where you want to study overseas will be two of the biggest decisions you will make, so it’s important to consider your options carefully.

Things to consider

  • What is your main motivation for studying overseas?
  • Do you plan on doing any personal travel while you’re away?
  • Do you have family overseas?
  • Are you interested in exploring your family history?
  • Do you have a must-see destination?

By considering these questions, you’ll start to formulate an idea of the destinations that interest you. Your main motivation is particularly important, as those looking to explore family roots will vary to those looking for host institutions that excel in their field of study. Keep an open mind and research a number of options before making your final decision.

Keep in mind

Start and end times for semesters vary in some destinations. This may affect how long you have to complete your application, or which destinations are a viable option for you. Different programs have different due dates, so allow yourself plenty of time to complete the application process.

Financing Travel

One of biggest considerations for many students is how to finance an overseas study experience. The cost of studying overseas varies from person to person as it depends on several factors, including the destination country, the program and the length of your trip.

Costs of study

There are a range of expenses that you will need to be mindful of when budgeting for your overseas study. These may include:

  • Subject tuition fees (Note: Exchange students do not pay tuition to the host institution)
  • Travel insurance fees (Note: Some Universities offer free travel insurance to students travelling on approved University programs)
  • Passport and visa fees, including travel to another city for an interview if necessary
  • Flights and in-country transport costs
  • Accommodation (on or off-campus) fees
  • Health insurance fees
  • Daily living expenses
  • Spending money.
