Year 7 Owl Pellet Dissection

7A students dissected owl pellets to investigate owls’ diet and concluded that owls are carnivores. Some students shared what they found out during the dissection.

Nina and I uncovered many different sized bones in the owl pellet. We tried to identify some of the bones. Most of them were very hard to identify and looked quite similar. We found a lot of rib and limb bones. Overall, it was a disgusting but fun process.

Delilah and I had found various small bones, mostly consisting of limbs of rodents. The most exciting part of our discovery is that we found an entire skull and jaw of a rodent.

Ajara and I had uncovered a whole skull (jaw intact) of a rodent and found small bones from other small animals that revealed a hind or a front leg. Other bones consisted of scapulas, one rib and vertebrates.

At first my group and I were a bit hesitant to dissect the owl pellets, however after finding different shapes and sizes of the undigested bones of shrew and rodents, we found the process quite intriguing and fun.

At the start, Peggy and I were finding it pretty disgusting, smelly and tiring, but as we started to find bigger bones, the activity became fun and engaging.
