Year 5/6 News

Learning Centre Four

HOW ARE WE AT THE END?! It feels as though this year has gone insanely fast and we are now saying our goodbyes. As we come to the end of the school year, it is hard to believe how quickly it has flown by. We wish all families a very merry and safe Christmas and a relaxing holiday break. This year has been truly wonderful. From excursions to ACMI and Werribee Zoo, to our school camp in Anglesea, our Year 5 and 6 students have shared many memorable experiences and had an absolute blast along the way. There are so many special moments to reflect on, and it has all gone by in a flash. We would also like to congratulate our Year 6 students on their graduation. We are incredibly proud of all they have achieved and wish them every success and happiness as they begin the next chapter of their learning journey in high school. We sincerely thank our families for your ongoing support throughout the year. It has been a pleasure working alongside you, and we wish you all a joyful Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year.

Learning Recap

The Year 5 students presented their Student Leader Speeches to the Year 4-6 students, each student should be very proud of how they spoke, engaged and delivered their speech. Congratulations to those who will be representing our school in many roles in Year 6 Student Leadership Team for 2026.

Literacy:

We have continued to explore “Dirrarn” following the story of Mia through her journey into high school. Students explored paragraph writing, developing some new techniques. In Literacy this fortnight, Year 5’s have completed their novel study on the story Dirrarn, we all enjoyed reading the story and investigated it further. We are now into our fun and exciting Christmas activities. We have read Christmas stories and written our own Christmas stories.

Maths:

Math groups have been focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages. We have been using place value to break up decimal numbers into their standard and non-standard forms. In Maths, we are exploring operations. We have been focusing particularly on rounding (nearest tens, hundredths, thousandths). Students have found this area of Maths very enjoyable as rounding is something in which we can implement in our day-to-day lives.

Inquiry:

As we concluded our research into our chosen animals, this week we began writing our research into our own words, gathering information and developing our Informative Posters. In Inquiry, we have begun creating dioramas. Our Dioramas that we are creating are based on our research project where students were required to research about an animal focusing particularly on their habitat.

Religion:

We are entering the time of Advent. During this time, students learnt about the Advent wreath, and then we will be exploring the Jesse Tree and all the elements. In Religion, we are continuing to learn about the Jesse Tree. Thus far, we have learnt about the bible characters who make up the Jesse Tree and their significance.

CAMP Round Up….

On Monday 24th November the Grade 5/6 students had an unforgettable experience at Anglesea Discovery Camp. Over three days, students challenged themselves with outdoor activities including canoeing, the vertical climb, skateboarding, giant swing and archery. They learned to step outside their comfort zones, support one another, and work cooperatively in new environments.

Camp was a very good experience for all the Year 5/6s.

The activities they did were Giant swing, Vertical Challenge, Canoeing, Beach Carnival, Bush Cooking, Archery, Skateboarding, Crate Climb, Mountain biking and some students got to participate in a scavenger hunt around the camp grounds. Some highlights were Giant swing and the Scavenger hunt. The camp was a beach and outdoor camp in Anglesea, just off the shore of Great Ocean Road. They enjoyed a variety of international dishes such as rice, hotdogs, penne and bolognaise. Overall, both students and teachers enjoyed this camp and we hope that this was a memorable experience for the Year six’s last camp for Primary school.- Sanuk 5W.

A huge thank you to our teachers and support staff for their organisation and care, and to all families for their support. The camp was a wonderful opportunity for students to build resilience, independence and lasting memories.

Graduation Mass / Adventure Park

The Year 6 Graduation Mass was a very special and emotional celebration. It was a meaningful time to reflect on how far the students have come throughout their primary school journey and to bless them as they prepare for the next chapter of their lives. Well done to Joseph for being brave during the last assembly of the year and performing a classic piece on the violin! We also thank Tristan an OLSC Alumni, who just graduated from Mackillop College who was a student leader at OLSC and Mackillop and he gave some wonderful advice to the Year 6 students about what the future holds. The Year 6 students enjoyed a well-deserved celebration at Adventure Park for their Year 6 Fun Day. It was a fantastic day filled with excitement and memories to mark the end of their primary school journey.

Wild Action Incursion

The Year 5/6 students were lucky to finish off their inquiry unit with a visit from the Wild Action team. Carly visited and taught us about some amazing Australian animals, and students had the opportunity to pat and hold them. It was a memorable experience, with many students bravely facing their fears.

We say goodbye to Milla, who has been an integral part of the OLSC community since 2022.
