Technology Learning Area

An update from the Tech team

Hello and welcome to 2025 in the Technology Learning Area!! Our subjects include Digital Technology, Food Technology, Product Technology and STEAM.  In year 7 and 8, students are given the opportunity to experience all materials in semester length courses.

From year 9, subjects are electives and allow the students to extend their knowledge and skill based on areas of interest.  We have specialised learning areas that allow us to work in teams, collaborate on projects and use state of the art equipment. Let me introduce you to the team!

 Art Murals in Food Technology

Throughout 2024, one of our senior school art teachers, Siobhan Nichol, painted the back walls of both of our school kitchens. The artwork represents differing landscapes and across Victoria as well as hidden cues to staff.  Thank you, Siobhan! We absolutely love your design, and it makes us smile even more when we are working in these spaces!

Our classes so far……

Digital Technology

Year 7 students have been involved in various transition classes and attending Camp.  Upon their return, they will begin learning about their laptops and how to best use them for their learning. Year 9 students have been introduced to web browsers, web servers and HTML and learnt how to create their own HTML.

Food Technology

Year 8 students are getting to know the kitchen space and Mrs Hatfield who has all the Year 8's this year. The students have been introduced to some knife skills and made a yummy fruit salad. They have looked at the rules of the kitchen and we are looking forward to making a variety of foods in the coming weeks. Year 9 students have either, Mrs Hatfield or Ms Rep and Ms Shea (who are sharing a class). We started out, refreshing the rules and regulations that are needed in the kitchen and now we are starting on skills that are a little harder than in Year 8. The first Common Assessment Task will be around designing a Pizza. We can't wait to see what this semester brings.

Product Technology

Year 9 students have started looking at the properties and characteristics of different timbers, as their first product will be created using Australian Native hardwoods. Year 10 students have begun investigating the difference between Resistant and Non-Resistant Materials in preparation for their first design task 'to design a product that could aid individuals with a learning difficulty or disability'.

STEAM

Beginning in week 3, Year 7 students will look at how STEAM interacts with their daily life and have begin online safety modules in preparation for workshop classes. Year 8 students have gone over workshop expectations and safety, and have been briefed about their first project, 'Designing and constructing an acrylic light box'.

VCE Food Studies

Unit 1 Food Studies are lucky to have either Ms Shea or Mrs Hatfield, and we have started the unit by looking at the ways in which the first humans hunted and gathered food around the world. We have already started to prepare for our first SAC. All the students have been keen and are excited for the semester to come.

Unit 3 students are studying the complexities of the human digestive system and how macronutrients are broken down, absorbed and used.  They have had a session where they worked in teams using craft materials to create an annotated digestive system highlighting where mechanical and chemical digestion occurs.

VCE Computing – Data Analytics

Students have begun looking at SQL in databases and completing various tutorials on data sets.  In addition, students have started to learn how to work with large data sets and interpret their contents.
