Deputy Principal's Report

Up Day- December Friday 13

As we approach the end of the school year, the excitement of “Up Day” brings a wonderful opportunity for your child to visit their new classroom, meet their new teacher, and connect with classmates. This special day is designed to help children feel more confident and prepared for the next stage of their learning journey.

What to Expect

On Up Day, your child will likely:

  • Meet their new teacher and classmates: They will have the chance to get to know who they’ll be learning alongside next year. They will also complete a fun activitiy while they get to know their new learning space.
  • Visit their new classroom: Familiarity with their new environment helps reduce first-day jitters. They may even start to make a display they will see on the first day of school next year.
  • Engage in fun activities: Teachers often prepare games or tasks to help the children feel comfortable and confident.

This day is designed to build excitement and alleviate concerns, ensuring a smoother transition into the new year.

Questions to Ask Your Child

After Up Day, take the time to connect with your child. Here are some questions to help spark positive conversations:

  • “What are you most excited about in your new class?”
  • “Did you meet someone new today? What’s their name?”
  • “What do you think will be fun to learn next year?”
  • “How did the classroom feel? Is there something you’re looking forward to using or exploring?”

These open-ended questions encourage your child to share their thoughts and highlight the positive aspects of the experience.

How You Can Prepare Them

Parents play an important role in helping children embrace transitions confidently. Here are some ways to prepare them:

  • Celebrate their progress: Reflect on how far they’ve come this year, acknowledging their achievements and growth.
  • Discuss expectations: Talk about what might change, such as routines, subjects, or friendships, and reassure them that adapting is part of learning.
  • Encourage a growth mindset: Remind them that new challenges are opportunities to grow, and it’s okay to feel unsure at first.
  • Practise practical skills: If they’re moving to a higher level, help them develop any skills they’ll need, such as organising their belongings or taking more responsibility.

Stay Positive

While it’s natural for children (and parents!) to feel a bit anxious about change, focusing on the positives can help set the tone for a smooth transition. Highlight the exciting opportunities that lie ahead, from new friends to new skills, and remind your child that they have the support of their teachers and family every step of the way.

Transitions are a time for growth, and Up Day is a wonderful chance for your child to take their first steps into the next chapter of their learning journey. Let’s celebrate this moment and look forward to the many exciting adventures the new year will bring!
