Teaching, Learning and Book Club

Hello families,
Term 4 is always an exciting time to see our teaching and learning in action, with wonderful embedded routines. This week, I thought I would take a moment to explain one of our instructional routines that takes place in reading each day, Fluency Pairs.
What is it?
According to five from five, Fluency Pairs is a paired or partner reading strategy, with two students reading the same passage aloud to each other. When partnering students, more fluent readers can be paired with less fluent readers, or students who read at the same level can be paired to reread a story they have already had modelled for them.
Why do we do it?
We use Fluency Pairs to support the oral reading fluency of students. Maintaining an age appropriate oral reading rate is crucial to building a correct mental model that supports comprehension. If a student is too slow, it could be difficult to build their understanding, therefore, by practicing fluency each day we can build confidence and correct words read per minute, thus, increasing comprehension.
We use Fluency Pairs from Foundation to Year 6 and it is a routine that our students are enjoying more and more as their oral reading fluency improves!
Happy Learning,
Ms Barnett
