Numeracy

In Numeracy, we have been learning about division, with a focus on developing efficient mental strategies such as halving, repeated subtraction, using fact families, and skip counting. Lessons have been connected to real-life contexts, encouraging students to apply their skills in meaningful ways. Each Friday, we finish the week with a revision session covering all four operations—addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—helping students build accuracy, confidence, and fluency when solving a range of problems.

Reading

Students have made a fantastic start to Term 4! They have been exploring a range of text types and applying key comprehension skills and strategies such as comparing and contrasting, identifying themes, and making inferences. Reading groups are well underway, and students have also enjoyed helping to set up our new library spaces in the 5/6 area. Well done to everyone for their enthusiasm and effort!

In addition, our new phonics groups are up and running. These groups are exploring morphology (the structure of words) and etymology (the origins and meanings of words) to help students deepen their understanding of how language works. This targeted approach is supporting each student’s individual learning needs and strengthening their reading and spelling skills.

Writing

Our students have had a wonderful start to Term 4, diving into the world of poetry! They’ve been reading and analysing a range of poetic forms, including limericks, couplets, quatrains, and narrative poetry. Students have also enjoyed creating their own original poems, which are now proudly on display in our classrooms. All students have shown wonderful enthusiasm and participation — well done, everyone!

Inquiry

This term, our Inquiry focus has been on making thoughtful choices that balance our needs, wants, resources, and values to benefit ourselves, our community, and the world. Students have begun exploring what it takes to own and run a business, including how advertising can influence us as consumers. These discussions have led to meaningful conversations about ethical practices and decision-making. As part of this unit, students created creative posters showing the five items they would take to a deserted island, helping them distinguish between “needs” and “wants.”

On Tuesday, we were visited by local police officers who spoke to our students about the dangers of social media and the laws surrounding online behaviour. The session was highly engaging, with students asking thoughtful and insightful questions throughout. It was a valuable visit that helped students better understand their role and responsibility when using social media and interacting online.

Over these coming weeks, our Grade 5 students will be taking part in a Fantastic Amazing Race Challenge! Working in teams, students will be racing around the world completing a series of fun and fast-paced challenges that test their problem-solving skills, teamwork, and resilience. From decoding clues and solving puzzles to completing physical tasks, each team to be able to be successful, will show determination and cooperation, thinking creatively, and demonstrate strong communication skills. Good luck teams, and

                                                WELCOME TO THE AMAZING RACE!

GRADUATION

While the grade 5's are racing around the world, our Grade 6 students have officially begun their graduation dance and performance rehearsals! There’s been plenty of excitement (and a few nervous giggles) as students start learning their choreography and planning how they’ll celebrate the end of their primary school journey.

Under the guidance of Mrs Tonkin, the Grade 6s are working hard to perfect their moves, build confidence, and collaborate as a team. It’s wonderful to see their creativity, enthusiasm, and sense of fun shining through. We can’t wait to see all their hard work come together in a fantastic end-of-year celebration!

Melbourne Victory

We’re thrilled to announce that Melbourne Victory is running soccer clinics for all our Grade 5/6 students every Tuesday this term! These sessions give students the chance to learn new skills, improve their teamwork, and stay active — all while being coached by professional players and trainers from one of Australia’s top soccer clubs.

Students are already enjoying the fun, energy, and challenges of each session, with a big focus on sportsmanship, communication, and persistence. A huge thank you to Melbourne Victory for bringing such an exciting opportunity to our school — we can’t wait to see our young players continue to develop their skills each week!

*****School Supplies******

In Years 5/6, we have noticed that many students are missing some of the essential tools needed for their learning. Over the school holidays, we kindly ask families to help their child replenish their pencil case, so they are fully prepared for Term 4.

Items to organise include pencils, pens, rulers, glue sticks, sharpeners, and erasers.
