Grade 5/6 News

Hello Grade 5/6 families, and welcome back to Term 4! We hope that everyone had a safe and restful break.
It has certainly been a busy start to term 4 for our grade 5/6 students. We have already completed many learning experiences and will continue to as the term progresses.
In English, the students have been reading and analysing texts from the author Jackie French. We have so far read the texts called ‘Flood’ and ‘Fire’. These texts have shown how devastating natural disasters can be to humans, animal life, the environment and the world as we know it. The texts also demonstrate how strong communities can be in the face of adversity, as well as how they support one another in times of crisis. We have also started our next writing unit, which is based on the narrative text called ‘The Ice Forest’. Students have been learning to use descriptive and figurative language to make settings come to life and to create tension in their story.
In Numeracy, grade 5 students have been learning about time and duration and chance and probability. Grade 6 students have just finished completing their chance and probability and have just started learning about percentages. Students in both year levels have also been busy with completing numeracy assessments. Teachers have been very pleased with the improvements we have seen from these assessments!
Last week, we had five students from grade 5/6 who participated and delivered a speech at a TedX Talk event. These students worked hard in preparation to deliver speeches about important local and worldwide issues, providing insights and solutions to the issues they were presenting about. Well done to the following students, Maanika Kaur, Harleen Kaur, Avikaar Avikaar, Inaya Matta and Liza Ahmed who presented at the TedX Talk event. You certainly did yourselves and the school community proud!
You can watch these students TedEx talks on YouTube by searching for ‘TedX Tarneit Youth’.
