Grade 3 News

Dear Year 3 Parents/Guardians,

The Year 3 students have settled back in for Term 4. Below is a recap of what we have been learning since coming back for the final term of 2025 as Year 3 students.

Learning Focuses

Morphology

We recently completed learning around the morphemes including a range of prefixes and suffixes. So far this term we have learnt about:

  • Prefix anti- which means not/opposite
  • Prefix de- which means down/off
  • Suffix -en which creates verbs and adjectives
  • Prefix re- which means again/back to the start
  • Prefix im- which means in/into/upon

Grammar & Syntax

This term we have been exploring when to use the determiners an, a, the (articles) within sentences as well as editing sentences in past, present and future tense.

Writing

We have finished our unit on explanation texts and students have been busy publishing their stories on the computers. Along the way, we have practised using different writing tools to make characters come to life:

• Tool 1: using technical vocabulary related to the tropic being explained   Example: A kangaroo has pouch for their joey to live in

• Tool 2: using key phrases and words to keep the reader interested.   Example: “Did you know that a frog is born without legs!!”

• Tool 3: using cause and effect language that explains if something was to happen what would be the result because of it   Example: There is a rainbow in the sky because it has finished raining.

• Tool 4: using comparisons to build the readers' understanding of something they already know.   Example: A frog has strong hind legs like a kangaroo, as they use these to jump and cover larger spaces.

We have just started a unit on portal tales, where a main character is transported to another place and they find a way back to their normal world.

Students were given a hook which was ‘Rainbow Road’ where a rainbow was drawn outside of their classrooms to get the students engaged as we started to unpack the story and learn some new tools to improve our writing skills.

Knowledge

In Knowledge, this term we have started learning about Ancient Rome and the way of life during this time. As we are learning we are comparing this to the way of life from the Vikings and First Australian units we have done earlier in the year to allow for worldly knowledge to be built for the students.

Maths

Our focus has been on 3D objects, in particular the difference between pyramids and prisms.

We have also moved into completing multiplication and division.

In multiplication the students have been learning to set it up in  a vertical algorithm to allow them to solve these equations efficiently.

In division the students have been learning about how many times the number in front of the division sum goes into each number to solve it. Looking at the examples below you can see that 2 goes into 7, 3 times so the 3 was recorded on the top and there is 1 left over which is in the red and has been placed in front of the 6 making this number now 16. 2 goes into 16, 8 times and we record this above the line again. So we now know that 76 divided by 2 equals 38

SEL

This term we are working on Topic 7: Gender norms and stereotypes, where we are unpacking that both boys and girls can do things. For example, a boy can do dancing and a girl can play cricket.

Reminders

Students need to bring their satchel and diary every day. This helps with organisation, tracking reading progress, and communication between home and school. Nightly reading is an important routine, please encourage at least 10 minutes per night and record it in diaries. Students can also use Little Learners for extra practice. Please continue checking Compass regularly for updates, including the release of CATS (Common Assessment Tasks). Our next CATS for this term will be released this week. Viewing your child’s work and leaving a comment helps maintain strong home–school connections.
