Level 5 & 6

Week 6

Welcome to another great week in 5/6! Please find our curriculum updates, Term 1 dates and reminders below.

Grade 5 NAPLAN Note

As we move closer to the NAPLAN window, our Grade 5 students will continue preparing in a calm and structured way. Rather than repeatedly drilling test questions, our priority is ensuring students feel confident navigating the process on their iPads. They will complete a practice writing task and a practice maths session to become familiar with the format and expectations. Time will also be dedicated to improving typing fluency and confidently moving through the online platform. We will clearly explain timing and testing conditions so there are no surprises. Our goal remains the same; to reduce uncertainty, ease nerves and help students approach the assessments with confidence and composure.

Literacy

Reading

Our reading focus continues to centre on persuasive texts, including speeches, advertisements, narratives and opinion pieces. Students will closely examine the language choices authors make, identifying persuasive techniques, vocabulary and varying levels of modality. Through discussion and comparison, they will explore how writers shape ideas and influence an audience. This deeper analysis supports students in recognising the deliberate decisions behind strong persuasion and applying these strategies in their own writing.

What you can do at home:

When watching television, scrolling online or reading catalogues, pause to talk about persuasive language. Ask questions such as, “Who is the audience?” or “How is this trying to convince you?” These small conversations build strong critical thinking skills.

Writing

In Writing, students are now developing their own persuasive pieces in a style of their choosing. Whether crafting a speech, advertisement, letter or article, they will apply persuasive vocabulary and techniques explored in Reading. Short, focused challenges will continue to strengthen their ability to form clear arguments, select precise wording and consider audience impact. A strong emphasis will remain on revising, editing and self-assessing so students can deliberately refine and improve their final product.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to share their opinion on everyday topics and explain their reasoning. Prompting with questions like, “What makes that a strong argument?” or “How could you make that more convincing?” supports clarity and confidence.

Numeracy

Level 5

Students will continue working through NAPLAN-style questions to build familiarity with question formats and practise structuring clear, logical responses. Alongside this, they will revisit factors and multiples, strengthening number fluency and confidence when working with larger values.

Level 6

Our Level 6 learners are beginning a focused unit on the four operations and the order of operations. They will learn how to correctly evaluate expressions involving multiplication and addition before extending to include subtraction and division. Students will practise solving increasingly complex expressions, including those with brackets, ensuring they understand why operations must be completed in a specific order. To apply their learning, they will undertake a rich problem-solving task titled “The Secret Recipe,” where accurate calculation and careful reasoning will be essential.

What you can do at home:

Encourage your child to complete the Mathletics tasks set by their classroom teacher and ask them to explain their thinking. Questions such as, “What do you solve first?” or “Why did you complete that step before the others?” help strengthen conceptual understanding.

CBL

Big Idea: Community

As we approach the Colour Run, students are refining their ideas for how they can positively contribute to the event as school leaders. The focus is on strengthening connection, inclusion and school spirit. Through discussion and collaboration, they will consider practical ways leadership can shape a strong and supportive community culture.

Wellbeing

Bullying Prevention – Setting, Means, Visibility

This week, students will explore how bullying can vary depending on the setting, the methods used and the visibility of behaviour. Discussions will focus on recognising different forms of bullying, understanding impact, and identifying strategies to respond appropriately. Building awareness and empathy remains central to creating a safe and respectful environment for all.
