Level 3 & 4

As we reach Week 6, it’s a wonderful time to reflect on how much progress has already been made this term. Students are becoming more independent learners and are showing great responsibility in their work and classroom routines. We will continue to give opportunities for students to revisit our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support expectations and practise behaviours that help us build our classroom environment and our relationships with others to support our learning!

Digital Technology

All students must bring their iPads and headphones to school fully charged every day, especially grade 3 students who need these to ensure a smooth and positive NAPLAN preparation.

Grade 3 NAPLAN Note

As we move closer to the NAPLAN window, our Grade 3 students will continue preparing in a calm and structured way. Rather than repeatedly drilling test questions, our priority is ensuring students feel confident navigating the process on their iPads. They will complete a practice writing task and a practice maths session to become familiar with the format and expectations. Time will also be dedicated to improving typing fluency and confidently moving through the online platform. We will clearly explain timing and testing conditions so there are no surprises. Our goal remains the same; to reduce uncertainty, ease nerves and help students approach the assessments with confidence and composure.

Grade 3 Camp

On Monday your child will receive a plastic pocket with a camp medication dose form, medication and health document and a packing list. Please return the medication/health forms as soon as possible. This week students will have an opportunity to view the camp video from last year to see all the fun and to start to get a sense of the camp experience.

Mount Evelyn Discovery Camp is also hosting an open 'camp walk through', we would highly recommend families who may be feeling nervous about camp take the opportunity to see in person what it is like.  If your child is feeling unsure about camp please let your classroom teacher know so that we can support them in their preparation.

Camp Walk Through Information

Date: Monday 13th of April, 2026

Time: 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Location: Mt Evelyn Discovery Camp - 70 Tramway Road, Mt Evelyn, 3796

This relaxed, no-pressure event is the perfect chance for both students and parents to explore the campsite, meet our friendly team, and get a real feel for what camp is all about – before the adventure begins.

Whether you're feeling excited or a bit nervous, visiting the site, seeing where everything happens, and asking any questions can make all the difference in building comfort and confidence ahead of camp.

Come along for a guided tour, a few laughs, and a sneak peek at all the fun and learning that awaits.

If you could please share the below link on your compass platforms for parents to register to give us an idea on how many people will be attending that would be greatly appreciated.

Kitchen Garden

Our students have all began cooking during their sessions! It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm as they explore new skills and ingredients.

If your child is a fussy eater, we recommend that they continue to bring a small lunch from home. While we cook something delicious each session, the food prepared may not always be enough for a full lunch. Students will have the opportunity to eat the food they bring from home before heading out for lunch play.

We warmly encourage all students to try new foods and give everything a go. However, we always respect individual preferences and never pressure children to eat foods they do not like.

We rely on the support of our wonderful parent helpers to ensure this program is safe and successful. We also warmly welcome help from grandparents, aunts, and uncles. If you or a family member are able to spare some time to support the program, please use the link below to sign up:

We post our recipes on Showbie for students who would like to recreate the amazing dishes they make in our cooking classes.

Please use the Showbie code below if your child would like to access these recipes:

Wellbeing

On Monday, The Cyber Safety Project will be running incursions throughout the day, with our students attending in the morning. We are also excited to welcome a visit from the eSafety Commissioner on the same day.

To support your child's learning

You could ask them what they learned from the workshop about staying safe online. Encouraging open conversations helps children feel confident to share their online experiences and ask for help if needed.

You may also like to visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website, particularly the section on online gaming. This area provides practical advice for families, including:

  • Setting up and choosing age-appropriate games
  • Understanding gaming features such as chat functions and in-game purchases
  • Tips for playing safely with others online

These resources are designed to help families build safe and positive online habits together.

CBL

This week we will explore community groups in Wonga Park by reading maps and locating places where people gather.

We will investigate:

  • What different community groups exist in Wonga Park
  • Where they are located
  • How these groups operate
  • The rules and responsibilities people have within each group
  • Why rules are important for communities to function successfully

Through this learning, students will develop their understanding of how communities work and how people contribute to them.

To support your child's learning

Talking about local places you visit (e.g. sporting clubs, parks, libraries, CFA, community halls). Discuss what happens there and who helps run them. Discuss rules at home and comparing them to rules in community groups (Why do we have them? What would happen without them?).

Reading

Our mentor text this fortnight will be Rose Meets Mr Wintergarten by Bob Graham. This heart-warming picture book explores themes of kindness, courage and not judging others before you know them. It connects closely to our Community Based Learning (CBL) focus on community.

Students will focus on:

  • Developing comprehension skills
  • Identifying how the author and illustrator engage and hold the audience
  • Exploring how language and illustrations work together to create meaning

To support your child's learning

  • Read together and ask: What message is the author trying to teach us?
  • Discuss how pictures add meaning to the story.
  • Encourage your child to make connections to their own experiences in the community.
  • Practise retelling the story in their own words.

Writing

Students will continue their focus on persuasive writing. They will explore persuasive structure and devices such as emotive language, strong arguments, and convincing conclusions.

To support your child's learning

  • Ask your child to persuade you about a simple topic (e.g. choosing a movie, dinner, or weekend activity).
  • Discuss persuasive techniques used in advertisements.
  • Encourage them to give reasons to support their opinions.
  • Practise structuring ideas clearly (introduction, reasons, conclusion).

Maths

Grade 3: Students will revise a variety of mathematical concepts in preparation for NAPLAN.

Grade 4: Students will begin their focus on time, including reading and interpreting analogue and digital clocks, calculating elapsed time, and solving real-world time problems.

To support your child's learning

  • Practise quick recall of addition and multiplication facts,
  • Encourage your child to visit Mathletics for set tasks and utlise the Multiverse area
  • Involve your child in real-life maths (reading timetables, calculating time until an event, handling money).
  • Use clocks at home to practise telling and calculating time (Grade 4 focus) including digital and analogue clocks.
  • Encourage explaining their thinking when solving problems.
