LOTE (Mandarin)

Ms Wenxi Jiang

This term in Mandarin, students have been learning about Chinese New Year through traditions, zodiac animals, and the famous origin myth of the Great Race. They explored how the zodiac animals were chosen and practised writing Mandarin characters while learning more about Chinese culture and celebrations.

Lower Grades (Foundation- Year 2)

Our younger students used their imagination to think creatively:

“If you could add a 13th animal to the zodiac, what would you choose?”

Students suggested wonderful ideas including dolphins, cats, eagles and even mythical creatures! They explained why their chosen animal would be brave, kind, fast or clever enough to join the zodiac race.

Upper Grades (Year 3 and up)

Our upper grade students explored the traditional Chinese art of paper cutting, also known as 窗花 (window flowers). Students learned that these intricate red paper decorations are often displayed on windows during Lunar New Year to symbolise good luck, happiness, and prosperity.

They carefully folded and cut symmetrical designs, creating beautiful patterns inspired by zodiac animals and festive symbols. Through this activity, students developed their fine motor skills while deepening their understanding of Chinese cultural traditions.

We were very impressed with their patience, creativity, and attention to detail!
