Container Deposit Scheme – CDS

We’re excited to announce that Eco Club will now be collecting juice boxes and milk boxes in the classrooms to take to the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).

These drink boxes can’t be recycled through Darebin Council’s kerbside recycling, so at school, we have to put them in the landfill bins.

The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) is a Victorian recycling program that provides a 10-cent refund for every eligible drink container returned. It’s a fantastic way for students to learn about recycling and to begin thinking about waste as a resource; something that has value and that people are willing to pay for.

Veggie Garden

Eco Club is also going to replant our veggie garden this term and we are looking for parent volunteers to help maintain the beds. It’s not a big job and we mainly need parents who are able to water. Send an email to the office if you want more information, or to volunteer.

Soft Plastic Recycling

You may already know that we separate our soft plastics at Fairfield PS. You can view our impact report pictured here. The data shows that as a school, it is absolutely worth the effort it takes to separate soft plastics.

There has been a lot of discussion and change around soft plastic recycling in recent years.

If you’re interested in learning more about the future of soft plastic recycling in Victoria and how we can “close the loop,” you can hear Darren Thorpe from APR Plastics speak here (scroll to around the 14-minute mark).
