Focus on Physical Education

An Amazing Start in PE!
It has been an amazing start to the school year in Physical Education (PE). I have been very impressed with how classes have settled into the year. All classes are learning the different classroom procedures used in PE and are doing a great job of demonstrating these, especially how to enter the gym.
Foundation Students
The first couple of lessons with the Foundation have been a lot of fun as they explore the gym space and play some simple games to explore different movements. The Foundation students have settled into the procedures very well and I am excited to watch them grow throughout the year.
Grade 1&2 Students
Students have also been familiarising themselves with the procedures used in the PE classroom as well as playing simple movement games. These games are designed to help students with their coordination and spatial awareness.
Grade 3, 4 & 5 Students
Students have started the year by playing target games. Target games are a fun way to help students gain greater control of their throwing skills and allow them to practise their group work skills. These games introduce students to what independent play might look like in PE, as they are required to umpire and score games within their group.
Grade 6 Students
The grade 6 students are busy practising their term two interschool sports. Students will be taught some of the main skills used in soccer, football and netball. They will also be taught some of the basic rules for these sports as well as the modified rules that are used in the interschool sports competition.
Looking ahead
Later this term all students in Grade 1 – 3 will be participating in hockey clinics run by Yarra Hockey Club. Students will have two PE lessons practising hockey, which will be taught by coaches from the club.
During the last few weeks of term one students from Grade 3 – 6 will be given the opportunity to learn and practise running laps of the FPS cross country course. The school's cross country trials will happen during PE lessons for all grade 3 – 6 students in the week commencing Monday 23 March (weather permitting). Every lap completed by students will earn points for their house. Those who complete the full distance will receive a time and these times will be compared to select students to compete in the District Cross Country event which happens in term two.
