Youth Road Safety: e-bikes and e-scooters

Each term, members of the Truganina P-9 College leadership team attend the Principals and Police forum with members of the Proactive Policing Unit and other community members.

In this term's meeting, the focus was on road safety for young people, especially laws and behaviours relating to the use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

Did you know? Children under the age of 16 are never permitted to ride e-scooters.

Victoria Police's Leading Senior Constable Rodan Smith made clear to all present that all powered bikes and scooters should be thought of as motor vehicles and that families should take safety measures in line with this. Police reported an ongoing challenge with young people taking risks when riding bikes and scooters on footpaths and roads.

They recommend strong family oversight of use of both e-bikes and e-scooters, especially regarding modifications made that increase maximum speed above the legally allowed 25 km/h (and therefore increase the risk of serious harm). Officers focus on education for young people and families first, but Victoria Police has the power to seize vehicles that have been illegally modified if deemed necessary to do so.

LSC Smith provided principals with a fact sheet about e-bikes and e-scooters that highlights what is and is not allowed for our young people. They also remind all riders of bikes and scooters that it is Victorian law to wear helmets when riding.

Truganina P-9 College would like to reiterate this important safety message and thank all of our families who are already supporting their students to be safe and responsible riders to and from school. We love seeing so many of our young people getting fit and active each day!

More information about this and other relevant topics can be found at Victoria Police's road safety website.

School Crossings

Wyndham City is responsible for the running of school crossings, training and employment of school crossing supervisors and the supply of the uniforms and equipment. Funding support is received by the Department of Transport and Planning to help with these costs.

School crossings are active on weekdays during Victorian school terms, usually between 8am to 9.30am and from 2.30pm to 4pm. These times are set by Department of Transport.

School crossing supervisors have a much-valued role in Wyndham where they offer the safe passage for students and parents crossing the road near schools during peak school times. It is the responsibility of all road users to adhere to road rules to help ensure the safety of children and pedestrians using the school crossing.
