Year 5 & 6

Around our level

OASIS CAMP

On Wednesday 20th March, the Year 5 and 6 students travelled all the way to Lilydale Lake. While there, we enjoyed the playground and had our morning snack. We then boarded our bus and within a blink of an eye we had arrived at our destination, Oasis Camp. With our luggage, we headed to the gym where we were introduced to Bec, one of the camp instructors. Bec briefed us on the camp regulations, followed by a game that had us running everywhere, lunch and then we ventured to our cabins. After setting up our beds, we commenced the afternoon activities; high ropes, archery, candle making or giant swing. Each activity group did two of these activities. We then had a delicious meal followed by the evening program. Mrs Haysom led us in an evening of laughter through playing a variety of games. Knights, Cavaliers and Soldiers was so much fun to play. Around 9pm we were back in our cabins and we finally settled down to sleep around 11pm.

The next morning, some of us were up at 6am and playing quietly in our rooms, while others slept in until 7:30am. Breakfast was at 8. Then it was a full day of activities - you did the two activities that you didn’t do yesterday as well as the flying fox and the games room. It was also fun to join up with everyone at snack and lunch to hear what they had to say about the activities. The evening program was organised and run by our captains. They did such an amazing job. We made paper aeroplanes, played charades, played games and answered trivia questions. After supper we headed off to bed.

We were all up early Friday morning as we had to pack and vacate our cabins before breakfast. We trudged down the hill with our luggage and then ate yummy pancakes. Games in the gym were next and then at 11am it was time to say good-bye to Oasis. We headed back to Lilydale Lake and participated in a hike. Then it was lunch time and a chance to relax, chat or play footy. Another school was on the playground so we stayed away from there. We returned to school around 2:15, exhausted but thrilled that we had such an amazing camp. Oasis has certainly been an experience to remember and we really appreciate the support of the parents who came along, Andrew, Dean and Kerryn. Of course it could not have happened without Mrs Haysom, Mrs Freene, Mrs Macrae, Mr Darby, Mrs Hurley and Drew for helping us have a brilliant time.

Here are some individual comments about the camp from students who have not made a comment in the newsletter before.

5/6A

The evening activities were so much fun. I loved playing dodgeball because Drew and Mr Darby joined in and made it more intense and Mr Darby kept catching the balls people were throwing at him. I also really liked playing soldiers, knights and cavaliers. I had never played it before and it got very hard. The last two teams had a dance off to a song it was very funny to watch.

I liked it so much. I hope my highschool camps will be as much fun. I also liked my cabin group and the meals were really good.

Oscar F

Flying Fox was SO MUCH FUN! I loved it and also loved seeing the brave people going upside down. I didn’t go upside down but did have fun and when everyone yelled POTATO you had to tuck your head in and your legs in so you didn’t get hurt when you stopped.

The food there was actually really good; it tasted like heaven! My group (Group B) which was Mrs Macrae's group, did candle making first. Everyone made either these really cool and funky looking candles or a straight as can be, candle! People were great at sharing the different colours of wax  so everyone got their colour of choice!

Pippa R

OMG, camp was so fun. The games room had air hockey, pool, ping pong and a soccer game.

Flying Fox: I was scared. I walked up the stairs and I saw cats. I patted one then I got on the platform, got hooked on then I jumped. My brain was freaking out. My brain thought I was going to die then I got told to tuck into a potato so I did then boom I got swung back and it was over.

I loved candle making because the teacher was very nice. The tacos were amazing and the high ropes were good.

Charlie

I liked the flying fox because it went across the oval and you could do any movement, like going upside down. You also had to go into a potato like a ball to be safe.

Kade

I loved the flying fox / zipline because it was long and high and it was like a leap of faith. We had to jump off a ledge and slide down. You could flip half way and your world would be upside down. The games room was super fun as we got to play table tennis, air hockey, pool and a soccer thing,

Hunter

Candle making was my highlight because you got to make it however you liked. I made a zig zag using green, blue  and purple wax. It looks so cool. The fun bit was when you got to dip the candle into the wax.

My highlight at camp was the flying fox. At first I was a bit scared but one of the amazing staff, Nat, helped me do it. It was super fun. And I went on it a second time.

Camp was amazing. One of the highlights was the giant swing. It felt like you were in a really fast car going down a hill. It was scary when you had to pull the red rope to detach you from the swing. On the 2nd night,

Oscar M and I won, Knights Cavaliers and Soldiers in a dance off.

Ollie

My highlight was the giant swing. It was so fun. At first I was a little nervous but when I was on it I was so excited. When you were on the swing your activity group would pull a rope and when you say stop they would stop pulling the rope. You were given a red string to pull at the top of the swing and when you pulled it you would go flying. Most people said the harness hurt but it didn't hurt me that much. I had such a good time at camp so it was extremely hard to decide on only one highlight.

Sophie

My favourite bit about camp was the giant swing and the high ropes. The swing was my favourite because it was huge and pulling that little rope when you're up there gave me a shock of fun. The high ropes was also my favourite because I got to go to the top of the high ropes, but the best bit was the food as it was spectacular.

Cooper

My highlight at Oasis was the giant swing because I loved when you just got to swing up really high and all your friends and teammates were cheering for you. I got a little fright when I pulled the string but it was definitely worth it.

Violet

I enjoyed everything at camp, but I loved the desserts and the flying fox the most. The giant swing too. as well as my cabin! The flying fox was crazy and amazing. I truly flew, in my eyes. You went flying across the place and you saw all the little people and plants under you. The desserts? Well, all I can say is THEY WERE SOO GOOD! The giant swing was high and again, I thought I was flying. The cabin? Best people in it ever! I loved camp.
