Updates from our Pastoral Groups (Units)

Foundation ~ Prep

Our Prep students have been learning the Scripture story of Palm Sunday and getting ready to share the significant story that begins Holy Week with our school community this coming Monday. Our Prep are able to retell the story through words and depict through illustrations. Please see our Catholic Identity Page for the details of our Holy Week Liturgies, we would love for you to join us.

Early Years ~ 1/2

Middle Years ~ 3/4

As part of Harmony Week and our shared inquiry into 'Can we belong to more than one culture?', we explored various cultural celebrations. We used books and the internet to find out about a chosen cultural celebration and used our reading skills to find specific information in these texts. We learnt about different ways we can record what we've been reading and that taking notes can help us when we summarise a text.

We also learnt that paraphrasing is when we put the ideas and information from others in our own words and practiced this when we shared our learning with others by creating a poster. Happy Harmony Week!

Specialist News – JAPANESE with FOUNDATION Students

Spiral Dragons

Foundation students have completed two sessions of Japanese so far. They have learnt to say ‘OHAYO-GO-ZYMAS’ (Good morning) at the start of the lesson, and to say ‘HI’ (Yes) when answering the roll call.

This week, the students learnt that the year 2024 is the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese/Japanese zodiac calendar. They decorated the spiral dragon with the colourful tissue rounds. The dragons swirled round and round in the cool autumn breeze.

Visual Arts Expo ~

The Visual Arts Expo held in our Middle & Upper years was an exceptional showcase of creativity, talent, and innovation. This event provided a platform for students to exhibit their artistic endeavours and excellent fashion sense in shoes!!!

Thank you to our families who were able to attend our expo.

Harmony Day ~

A wonderful day of celebration for Harmony Day, where our students showcased their appreciation for diversity and unity. Harmony Day, which is celebrated annually on March 21st, is a day dedicated to celebrating Australia's cultural diversity and promoting inclusiveness, respect, and a sense of belonging for everyone.

Our school embraced the spirit of Harmony Day with enthusiasm, engaging students in prayer and various activities that highlighted the importance of cultural harmony and understanding. Our students are so proud of who they are and where they come from, it is just so wonderful to see and be a part of the inclusive and vibrant culture we have created here at St. Mel's.
