Hands On Learning

This week, the HoL crew had a fun time learning new skills around the school and in the kitchen.

They cooked Apple and Rhubarb Muffins for morning tea for the staff using fresh apples and rhubarb from the garden. This part of their weekly cooking session focuses on the HoL fundamental ‘a chance to give back’ where they can make valuable contributions to their community, building self esteem and connection. The teachers will make a donation for the snack/lunch, which will be split between helping fund the HoL program and supporting a charitable organisation of their choice - Foodshare.

In the afternoon, the crew worked in 2 teams - one in the garden, one in the kitchen. The garden crew loaded a trailer with green waste and learnt how to use ratchet straps and planted some lettuce and cabbages, as well as digging up some surprise potatoes.

The kitchen crew practiced their knife and stovetop safety skills as they whipped up soft shell tacos for lunch. A quick addition to the tacos was a side of air fryer chips, using the potatoes that accidentally got chopped or stabbed as we were digging up the garden bed soil.

The last task of the day was to decide next week's staff snack and HoL lunch. The menu is scones with jam and cream for the staff, and potatoes 3 ways for the HoL crew to use the rest of the potatoes we dug up.
