Our Vision - Part 3
Rebecca Hall, Executive Principal
In this final article exploring our College Vision Statement, we turn to the concluding phrase:
“…empowering them to serve others and respond to God’s calling in their lives.”
At Donvale Christian College, we believe that service is not an optional extra in the Christian life, it is a natural and joyful outworking of the gospel. Because we have been loved, we love. Because Christ has served us, we serve others. Because God has called us to follow Him, we seek to live faithfully within His purposes for our lives.
Empowering students to serve begins with modelling servanthood. Our students learn what faithful service looks like as they observe the way we treat them, with care, humility, dignity, and respect. When staff serve students with patience and compassion, they see Christlike leadership in action. This daily posture shapes their understanding of what it means to “consider others above yourselves” and to use one’s gifts for the good of others.
Service is also taught through intentional conversations. As parents and educators, sharing about the ways we serve in our churches, community groups, and volunteer organisations helps students see that serving the Lord is a privilege, and often involves sacrifice. These stories give students a living picture of faith in action, encouraging them to imagine how God might use them, now and in the future, to contribute to His kingdom.
In addition, we seek to equip students with an understanding of the significant social justice issues facing our world; locally, nationally, and globally. We want them to grapple with real needs and real suffering, and to consider how their gifts, talents, and actions can bring hope and compassion to those in need. This includes creating opportunities for students to learn about injustice, to reflect on it through a biblical lens, and to consider practical ways they can respond, whether through prayer, advocacy, giving, or hands‑on service.
Central to empowering students to serve is grounding them in the truth of the gospel. Students need to know, not just intellectually, but deeply, that Christ’s saving work is complete, sufficient, and given by grace alone. As Scripture teaches, we do not serve others to earn salvation; we serve because salvation has already been given to us through Christ. Our acts of service become expressions of gratitude from hearts transformed by grace. As people saved by Christ, we joyfully participate in His redemptive work in the world, serving the people He has made and the creation He calls us to steward.
Responding to God’s calling is not confined to future vocations; it begins now, in the daily opportunities students have to show kindness, demonstrate responsibility, pursue justice, speak truthfully, and offer compassion. Our role is to help them recognise these moments and to understand that God works through ordinary faithfulness as much as extraordinary acts.
As a College, we are committed to nurturing young people who live courageously and compassionately, who seek justice, who walk humbly with their God, and who understand that their lives are part of God’s larger story. It is our prayer that every student entrusted to our care will be equipped to serve others joyfully and to respond wholeheartedly to whatever God calls them to do—in their families, churches, workplaces, communities, and throughout the world.
