Boarding Life

Boarding Reflections
Often, I write about the busyness of boarding life, however recently we have intentionally created opportunities for stillness and reflection within our home.
Our boarders recently attended the Anzac Day Memorial Service at Rose Park. Deputy Head Boarder Nellie Polkinghorne and Year 11 student Airlee Seal had the honour of placing wreaths at the foot of the Fallen Soldier Memorial, wreaths made by our boarders earlier in the week. Despite the very early start, the chance to pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, so that we may live safely and freely, was important. On return to the Boarding House, the girls were rewarded with a well-earned bacon and egg barbecue.
The following day, boarders attended Mass at St Ignatius as part of our Term 2 Commitment Day, a tradition where our community gathers on the first Sunday of each term. Somewhat fittingly, it was the Fourth Sunday of Easter, also known as Good Shepherd Sunday, and our regional girls particularly enjoyed the many references to sheep throughout the homily. Mass, too, provides an opportunity for stillness and reflection in a busy world.
These moments of pause are intentionally curated and encouraged, not only for spiritual growth and gratitude, but also for good mental health and wellbeing. A boarding house is a wonderfully busy place, and there are certainly days when even I feel overwhelmed by the many moving parts, often joking that I am taking ten minutes to step out to the front garden to “touch the grass” and breathe. Jokes aside, I always return with a clearer head and renewed perspective.
Alongside the more formal opportunities mentioned, our girls take walks and runs, both alone and with friends, through the beautiful parks and streets of Marryatville and surrounds. We also have a communal mindfulness colouring activity permanently on the go in the dining room, which the girls dip in and out of at various times of the day and night. Future plans to support times for reflection include a communal and ongoing puzzle station and softer lighting for the evening in our communal lounge rooms.
The value of stillness and reflection, of slowing down and listening inward, cannot be underestimated, even in our noisy, boisterous, and busy home!
