From the Head of Senior School

Mr Trent Chapman

Speaking out about violence against women

The escalation in Australia of violence against women, and the subsequent media coverage, has permeated all areas of our lives. This has been the subject of our Year 11 and Year 12 meetings this week: both illustrating the nature of the tragedy and defining the steps necessary to build a safer society for everyone.

Violence against women is a societal problem where everyone has a responsibility to act by speaking up and speaking out. I wish to acknowledge and thank Mrs McCalman, Senior Years Co-Ordinator, and Mr McLennan, Head of Science, for leading this important conversation with our seniors this week. Information has been posted on year group pages in the Hub as a starting point for further conversations at school and at home.

A huge thanks to our Gap students

Each year we welcome secondary school graduates from overseas to spend their gap year working in vital administration and support roles in all areas of the school. Since joining us in January, our beloved “Gappies” have provided outstanding support in all areas of the school. They have embraced every opportunity and have gone above and beyond in their various roles. Their enthusiasm and energy have been infectious, and it has had a positive impact on both staff and students alike. We are grateful for their willingness to support and their positive outlook. Our Gappies have proven to be invaluable members of our team, and wonderful role models for our students to follow. It is a pleasure to have them as part of our school community.

Wiburd Sheild Success

Mr Will Waterson, MIC of Cricket

Winners! On Wednesday 1 May, our Wiburd Shield Cricket team hosted Inaburra Christian College in the grand final of the NSW competition. The Wiburd Shield is a knockout competition played across New South Wales for students in Year 10 and below. In a match held-over from Term 1, the Kinross Wolaroi students lost the toss, and were sent in to bat in some challenging conditions. Exhibiting patience and with some lower order striking, we posted a modest 156 runs, thanks to a half century from Fletcher Byrne. In return, Inaburra looked to be on task to chase down the total, however some electric fielding from the hosts brought the match into the final over. Needing to defend 13 runs, captain Charlie Miller held his nerve and bowled our school into the history books. This marks Kinross Wolaroi's third title in the competition – the most of any school – and the first win since 2017.

Thanks must go to the coaches, Mr Matthew Byrne and Mr Walter Prowse, who guided the team through six knock-out rounds, and accompanied the team as they travelled the State. Further thanks are extended to our Grounds team, lead by Wes McDonald for the provision of our wonderful Main Cricket Oval throughout the competition.
