Wiburd Shield Cricket Competition

Winners! On Wednesday 1 May, our Wiburd Shield Cricket team hosted Inaburra Christian College in the grand final of the NSW competition. The Wiburd Shield is a knockout competition played across New South Wales for students in Year 10 and below. This win marks our third title in the competition – the most of any school – and the first for Kinross Wolaroi since 2017. Thanks must go to the coaches of the team, Mr Matthew Byrne and Mr Walter Prowse, who guided the team through  knock-out rounds, and accompanied the team as they travelled the state. Further thanks are extended to our Grounds team, led by Wes McDonald for the provision of our wonderful Main Cricket Oval throughout the competition.

Rugby

The Rugby season officially kicked off last weekend with most of our teams heading to Coonabarabran. The unfortunate decision made by Centennial Park to close their grounds meant that four of our teams games were cancelled. Whilst disappointed, this didn’t quash the boys enthusiasm as they fronted up Saturday morning in the rain and got some quality training done.

Our trip to Coonabarabran proved a fruitful day for our boys both on and off the field. Some quality bonding time took place on the bus and our boys were in full voice for the chants during the 1st XV game. On the field our boys were exceptional playing a flowing style of Rugby which led to our teams piling on the points. Our results were exceptional, the 1st XV won 51 - 0, 2nd XV won 53 - 0, 3rd XV won 33 - 0, 16As won 22 - 5, 15As won 63 - 15, 14As won 76 - 0 and 13As won 87 - 0. Whilst we could not have hoped for a better start, we are looking forward to a much tougher set of fixtures this weekend. All our teams travel to Barker for a whole school fixture so we are ready to get to Sydney, get the job done and come home with some wins.

Our girls officially start their season this Friday with some games against Scots All Saints and Mackillop College which will be played from 3.30pm at Bathurst Bulldogs Rugby Club. A lot of work has already been put in by coaches and players, so we look forward to seeing our girls ripping in on Friday night.

Camps Week

In week 11 of Term 1 the school held its annual camps week. 350 students from Years 8 to 12 went off to cadet camp; all of Year 7 went to the Great Aussie Bush Camps in Lake Macquarie; 30 students travelled to Thredbo to complete their adventurous journey; Community Service worked locally; all Years 10 and 11 were on work experience; and Year 12 completed HSC boot camp at school.

The annual cadet camp was one of the best we have had in a long time. The students were lucky enough to have plenty of unique experiences and overall completed in perfect conditions. It was impressive to watch platoons trek up to 46km with a pack in the space of two days and then spend the day making damper on a campfire, abseiling off a 50m natural rockface, completing the obstacle course and fishing on Lake Endeavour. A genuine highlight was watching a student catch his first ever fish, a 60cm Murray Cod is not a bad way to start! The experience provided students with unique challenges that fostered resilience, teamwork, and outdoor skills. Well done to Mr Lun, his team of cadet staff and our cadet leaders who ensured the camp ran smoothly and all cadets had a positive experience.

Year 7 camp traveled to Lake Macquarie for the first time. The Great Aussie Bush Camp was an excellent experience with the giant swing and high ropes course being a real highlight of the camp. The camp was a good chance to bond with a larger portion of their year group in an outdoor setting, promoting camaraderie and friendship. Stepping outside of their comfort zones in these activities built confidence and encouraged risk-taking in a safe environment.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award students travelled to Thredbo to complete their adventurous journey in Kosciuszko National Park. Students were faced with genuinely challenging conditions with low overnight temperatures and 15cm of snow. Completing the adventurous journey despite these obstacles showcased their perseverance and commitment to personal growth. Progressing with the Duke of Edinburgh award highlighted their dedication to outdoor exploration and skill development.

Students involved in the community service program were busy throughout camps week. They worked in the school kitchen, the Uniting Church and volunteered to assist with the selling of fundraising items outside of IGA. Students actively contributed to their local community through various volunteer efforts, such as working in the school kitchen and assisting with fundraising. Their involvement demonstrated a commitment to service and civic responsibility, fostering empathy and a sense of social responsibility.

Overall, camps week provided students with a multifaceted experience that challenged them both physically and mentally, encouraged teamwork and camaraderie, and instilled important life skills such as resilience, confidence, and empathy. These experiences are likely to have a lasting impact on their personal and social development, enriching their school experience and preparing them for future challenges.

NSW Polocrosse

Congratulations to Erica Stuart, Ryan and Sid Weston who were all selected to compete in the NSW polocrosse team at Barastoc Polocrosse Tournament. The Kinross Wolaroi polocrosse team is looking to be an odds on favourite to complete a repeat of the Division 1 polocrosse tournament held in Coonabarabran.

Australian Stock Horse Competition

Isabella and Lillian Pearce have spent much of their holiday competing at various events.  They travelled to West Wyalong for two days of competition for the ASH State Youth Championships, followed by the Riverina Branch Show also held at West Wyalong.  Both girls were very successful winning multiple places in both shows.

Additionally, they competed at the Orange Show with Lillian winning her Rider age group and Reserve Champion rider under 18 years, and Isabella winning Champion Working Stock Horse (open class).  Congratulations to both Isabella and Lillian who have been very busy with multiple commitments.

Debating

The Years 7-11 debating teams have exhibited remarkable prowess and determination in the HICES competitions. Their passion for debating has enabled them to create compelling arguments, setting a high standard for future debates. Furthermore, Year 8 and Year 11 debating teams have emerged as formidable contenders and are undefeated thus far. Their performances reflect their mastery of debating and ability to work collaboratively under pressure. We cannot overlook the commendable performance of our Year 7 students, who bravely stepped up to the challenge of debating in the Senior Division. Despite facing opponents with more experience, the Year 7 team showcased remarkable resilience and determination, narrowly missing victory. Their willingness to take on this challenge demonstrates their courage and potential for future success as they continue to hone their debating skills.

As we approach the final round of the HICES competition at the end of May, the debating teams are buoyed by their successes thus far; we are eager to continue our winning streak and progress further into the competition finals.
