The Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support (WSAPBS)

The Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited (DOSCEL) has ‘an aspiration for our students to thrive in the world; to be confident, competent and connected’ (Diocese of Sale Catholic Education Limited [DOSCEL], 2020, p.6). The DOSCEL Whole School Approach to Positive Behaviour Support (WSAPBS) provides the framework for schools to create environments that are predictable and known, providing safe learning spaces for students.

The WSAPBS supports schools to regularly plan, evaluate, review, and adjust existing practices in support of engagement and success.

Research demonstrates a well-established link between student engagement, behaviour, and academic achievement (Angus et al., 2009; Hart, 2014; Hattie, 2012; Marzano & Marzano, 2003). The WSAPBS targets the improvement of school climate, which has been found to be the most significant impact on student outcomes (Hart, 2014).

All members of the school community have a significant role to play in supporting a whole school approach to positive behaviour. Where all members work collaboratively, each child and young person has the opportunity to fully participate, engage in the process of schooling and become a successful learner.

The characteristics of a whole school positive behaviour approach include prevention, instruction, use of evidence-based practices, and utilising data for informed decision-making. A positive behaviour approach supports teaching and learning environments so that the academic outcomes of students are maximised.

The WSAPBS provides a structure and process for school communities to establish and maintain a positive social culture. Positive behaviour approaches are cohesive, collective, and collaborative, providing support and focus on the development of expectations, relationships, and skills; embedded in the teaching and learning, organisation, ethos, and environment and in the partnerships and services within the school community (WHO, 1998).

The WSAPBS processes enable collaboration, co-construction, and co-creation across the school community, in turn, building ownership and enhancement of the school improvement strategy (Hart, 2014).

The WSAPBS aids the facilitation of the Personal and Social Capability within the Victorian Curriculum, Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and Vocational Education.

Principles underpinning this positive behaviour approach promote high expectations for all students in Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College through the understanding that:

• Students are central to all decision-making and action.

• The safety of all students is a priority.

• A culture of learning is prioritised.

• Expert teacher practice is critical to student learning success.

• Expert teaching practices are evidence-based.

• Leadership is committed and provides clear direction.

Child Safety Standards at MMCRC

The 11 Child Safe Standards are in the poster below. Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College is required to comply with the Standards needed to implement all aspects of the 11 Standards.

Each of the Standards is expressed as a statement of an expected outcome that organisations must achieve. The Standards also include minimum requirements, to provide more clarity for your organisation about what you need to do.

Please browse through these standards and contact the College if you need more information on how Mary MacKillop Catholic Regional College specifically implements the standards.
