Cultural Diversity Week

By Amanda Seach

Diversity Week celebrations at Glen Waverley Primary School have been enjoyed by all this week.

Victoria has an incredible diversity of cultures, with more than 200 countries of origin, over 290 languages and dialects spoken, and 314 ancestries represented, and our school is a wonderfully diverse community.

Cultural Diversity Week recognises and celebrates this beautiful diversity and the impact it has had and will continue to have on our school and state’s identity, character, and way of life…. delivering social, cultural, and economic benefits for all of us now and into the future.

This year’s theme was “Our Shared Stories - Celebrating Together.”  This theme encouraged us to share our unique experiences and discover the beautiful threads that connect us all.

On Monday we were treated to special performances by students and parents from our community. Our wonderful performers included:

  • Our school Chinese Chior
  • Tanjinur, mother of Munisa 4E, with a Uyghur traditional dance
  • Minadi 3B with a Buddhist stanza recitation in Sinhala
  • Methasha 5B, Lesara 4B, Thiruni 2D and Ryleigh 2B with a Sri Lankan dance
  • Jyoti, mother and daughter Siya Perp C Indian ‘Kathak’ dance
  • Dwij 5B Freestyle dance

On Tuesday we celebrated by wearing our cultural dress to school and today we celebrated with Buddy classes gathering to “share their stories.” The students shared their home learning pieces to showcase their family’s culture and story. Whether a favourite childhood memory or a family's journey across continents, each story shared ignited deeper connections and understanding, generating respect that leads to a greater sense of acceptance and belonging amongst us all.

What a wonderful week this has been highlighting the beauty and joy of sharing and celebrating.
