Principal's Report

By Frank Catalano

Welcome back everyone!

I trust everybody was able to enjoy a relaxing school holiday and Easter break! It certainly has been wonderful to share the various school holidays stories with the children as they outlined where they went and what they got up to.  For me it is always a joy to be part of these stories!

Enjoy Term two everyone and please do not hesitate to see me at school or contact me on 9802 9938 or at  frank.catalano@education.vic.gov.au if you a query or an issue to discuss.

Welcome to the following new students.

Congratulations to Mrs. Garzberg – Grant

I am very proud to report the safe arrival of baby Shai who was born on Friday 19th April. Anat reports that all is well, and she looks forward to introducing Shai to our school community as soon as possible. Congratulations Anat, Tim, big brother Ari and to their extended families!

What has occurred in our school throughout the school holidays?

The school holidays are an opportune time for trade people to complete tasks; these holidays we:

  • Installed operable walls in between the Prep and Year 3 classes.
  • Updated the flooring in the art room.
  • Built a shade structure over the portables adjacent to the oval.
  • Installed cooling fans and updated the lights in the gymnasium.
  • Painted the inside of the Early Learning Centre.
  • Installed an additional storage shed behind the ELC and
  • Installed banner poles at the front of our school which display our school values.

Naturally the above would not be possible without the support of our school community. A sincere thank you to the families who have settled their 2024 school fees as your contribution makes a significant difference. Thank you everyone!

Year 5 Camp

Congratulations and well done to our fabulous Year 5 learners as they enjoyed 3 fantastic days at the Old Priory camp in Beechworth.  The children should be incredibly proud of themselves as they learnt so much about Australian history whilst developing their confidence, independence, self-esteem and ability to work with others.

Naturally, a school camp is not possible if it were not for the staff and other adults who attended and organised the camp. A sincere thank you and well done to Mr. Shen and Ms. Stevenson for their fabulous organisation, the rest of the Year 5 Team for their leadership and support and all the staff who attended or assisted in various ways. Congratulations, thank you and well done everyone!

In the Kids Corner section of the newsletter are some of the children’s recounts – I trust you enjoy reading them just as much as I have!

Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal

As mentioned in our previous newsletter, a sincere thank you to the entire GWPS community for the outstanding response to this year’s Royal Children’s Hospital Good Friday Appeal, where our school raised an amazing $3,185.15.

Sandaru (Year 3) was selected to contact the RCH GFA and pledge our donation. He spoke to Ben and was asked to “thank everyone at Glen Waverley Primary School, for our outstanding effort!”

Once again, well done and thank you everyone as this is just another example of how we make a difference in our school!

Container Deposit (Recycling) Scheme

Recently the Environment Captains, Navya, Sahana, Milan and Havish distributed a Compass post advising families that we have now registered with the Container Deposit Scheme. It has been wonderful to see so many of the children bring in eligible recyclable containers and place these in the blue bins near the Science Shed.

Below is a copy of the Compass post mentioned above. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact or see our office staff. We look forward to making an environmental difference by being able to recycle items as part of the Container Deposit Scheme and in turn, raise funds that will be used to improve our school’s facilities.

Highlighting our School’s Fundraising Efforts.

Recently Helen Hassiotis created a display which outlines our fundraising projects and, just as importantly, how much each of the initiatives raised. The display is located in the main building near the fish tank. May I suggest that you make the time to view it as it is very inspirational and informative.

We look forward to reporting how much we raise through various initiatives in forthcoming newsletters and on the fundraising display board in the main building.

Congratulations to the following children for their recent achievements:

It is wonderful that the children continue to pursue their interests outside of school, below are some of the most recent achievements:

Chess Achievements:

Prior to the holidays I received the following email from Senon (Year 3)

Hello Mr Catalano,

This is Senon, I participated in Northern Star Chess tournament held in Karingal Primary School today. I won 5 out of 7 games and won a bronze medal and I also got distinction in Year 3-4 Category. I am very happy and like to share this achievement with my friends at assembly.

Janhavi (Year 3) participated in a ‘continuous chess tournament’ recently. She played 4 games against 1 child and 3 adults, and she beat the child and 1 of the adults which she is incredibly proud of. Janhavi mentioned that the adult was very experienced and from New South Wales.

Agastya (Year 3) also played in a recent chess tournament. It was only his second tournament, and I am very proud to report that he won 4 games, which is one more win than hist first tournament. Included is a photo of Agastya’s Certificate of Credit (in the Year 3 and 4 category) and the Chess piece token he received.

Reyanshi (Year 2) also competed in a recent chess tournament where she received a bronze medallion and a Credit Certificate in the Year 1 and 2 category.

Victorian Indoor Cricket Team:

Congratulations to Krisha who has been selected to represent Victoria in the Under 14 Indoor Cricket championships. Naturally being selected for a state team is a phenomenal achievement, however considering Krisha is yet to turn 10 – this achievement is something even more special!

Below is a recount from Krisha for everyone to enjoy:

My indoor cricket achievement.

What I got selected in:

I got selected in the Victorian under14 indoor cricket team after very intensive and competitive trials. Players from all over Victoria came for trials but with my consistent hard work, determination and skill’s demonstrations, I got into the final Victorian team. Currently I am 9 years old so I am very proud to have made the Under 14’s team.

How and what I practiced

Every day I go to my backyard and driveway, I practice throwing the ball onto the wall and catching it. Moreover, I practice my bowling and batting skills. It helps me feel more confident after practice sessions both at home and with me team . at home I practice my cricket skills with my sister and dad. Considering I already practiced the motion of the skill, I feel comfortable when performing a new skill.

Where and when

I completed my trials in March. Further training is being held at Casey indoor stadium, most of my training are on Sunday’s. My first match will be on the 1st week of July. After the championship in July, Cricket Australia will pick the best players from different state teams to form the Under 14 Australian team. I will try my best to be part of that team!

Congratulations and well done to all of the children listed above, as you should be incredibly proud of yourselves! I look forward to sharing more of the children’s achievements in forthcoming newsletters.

Congratulations to Meththa and her team of assistants and thank you to the numerous families who supported the program.

Student Learning Awards

As a school community it is very important that we acknowledge and celebrate the wonderful achievements of our staff, parents and students. One way of accomplishing this is by participating in award ceremonies throughout the year and at the end of each term. Our end of term award is provided by the Kiwanis Club of Waverley and we are extremely grateful for their continued support to our school in the form of the Terrific Kids program.
