To begin our term, we are currently having a look at chemicals through our inquiry questions ‘How might our use of chemicals today affect future life?’. Within this learning, we have developed our understanding of what a chemical is as well as what in our daily life is considered a chemical. When reflecting on their understanding of chemicals, students shared their understanding of chemicals as:
Albert – A chemical is something to make a substance react, like water and soap.
Pavirna – It is a liquid, gas or solid that changes, it can have an impact on our lives.
Mindula – Something that is part of your body, or that you wear, it can come in liquid, gas or solid form.
To deepen our understanding of chemicals, we have begun to explore the perception of chemicals, asking and research ‘are all chemicals harmful?’ in which we were able to discover that in many cases chemicals are able to support our life and are essential to living a full and healthy life. The learners embarked on self-guided research into the chemicals, discovering where they are in the world around us, with students making realisations such as:
Veer – I found out chemicals can be good, as our body is made of them. For instance we are made of 65% oxygen.
Kylie – some chemicals are bad, they impact the environment. But others can be good because our body is made up of them.
