Year 10 Work Experience Program

Work experience provides invaluable opportunities for students to:

  • Develop employability skills that are transferable across many occupations and industries.
  • Try out "a day in the life" of an occupation that has piqued a student's interest.
  • Learn about safety in the workplace.

Work Experience Incursion Information

 

In 2025, the Work Experience dates will be Week 10 of Term 3

Work placement notifications and WorkSmart Certificates must be completed by the end of Week 4 of Term 3 so that safety assessments can be undertaken by The College.

 

While this is an amazing opportunity for students, safety is of paramount importance, as it is one of the biggest risks for new workers.

 

Students MUST ensure that the school has approved the work placement. Parents should not authorise their child to participate in work experience that has not been approved by the school. Some of the steps involved in arranging a work placement include :

  • Assessing the workplace.
  • Ensuring the work and duties are appropriate for our students.
  • Ensuring the student will be adequately supervised in the workplace at all times.
  • Ensuring the student is aware of their obligations and entitlements as a work experience student.
  • Ensuring parents provide informed consent (they have a reasonable understanding of the duties their child is likely to participate in at the workplace).
  • Providing worker's compensation insurance for the student during the times of their work placement.

It's important to secure agreement from a Host Employer as soon as possible, so that all of the above arrangements can be made.

 

How to Find a Work Placement

Students can begin contacting host employers at any time. A resource that helps break down each of the steps in the process can be found here.

An incursion will be held for all Year 10 students in week 10 of Term 2, explaining the process and providing tips and resources to source a work placement opportunity. Once a Host Employer has been identified, students can notify Mrs Byrnes so that she can begin the above arangements. This can be done by completing this form. 

 

Completing this form is NOT approval to attend work experience placement. When the placement is approved, students will receive an approval notice from the College.

 

Students are also required to complete the Online Work Health and Safety Course called Worksmart. 

Students are to :

  • Create a registration using their student email address
  • Complete the GENERAL workplace module - there are FOUR parts to this module
  • Complete AT LEAST ONE Industry Specific Module (only accessible once the General module has been completed)
  • Send through confirmation of completion by uploading their completed certificate (can be downloaded from the website) using this form.
