Year 1 Maths Games Day - Wednesday 12th November
Our Galilee Mathletes Maths Club has been a great success this term. A great leadership initiative we have done with our Year 5-6 Mathlete leaders actively assisting our Year 1 Galilee Maths Day this week.
Our rotation tasks in Maguire Hall were in House teams completing a scavenger hunt of 7x activities involving;
- Using coins to pay for items in a “lolly shop”
- Using directional language to solve a Minecraft puzzle
- Using rulers and tape to find the width of the hall
- Arranging 2D shapes to make a square tangram
- Measuring water to find how many 1x litre cups can fill up a container
- Using a calendar to calculate how many days until Christmas
- Investigating how many legs are in our Maths Storybook “How Many Legs”
Year 1 students had a lot of fun with their teachers using collaboration, concrete materials and a myriad of strategies in completing these games.
Students had fun completing in class activities for Maths Day creating a Shape Monster, investigating characteristics of 2D shapes and collating their data. They also read the classic book Who Sank the Boat? And did a STEM stak creating a boat out of foil to test if it can float. Plastic counting teddies were added to see how buoyant their boats were as they tested and modified their prototypes.
Special thanks to our amazing Year 5-6 Galilee Matheletes that helped with the preparation and running of our activities. It’s amazing for them to use their maths knowledge and leadership to pay it forward to our school community;

Galilee Mathletes Maths Club Prep-2 Update
Our Galilee Mathletes Maths Club has been continuing our great success this term. We have had a blast expanding our club to the Prep-2 students. The Mathletes enjoyed the tutorial videos made by our older Mathletes George, Leon, Francis, RJ and Hattie to help with game strategy playing Dogs and Pigs.
Other sessions focussed on a APSMO (AUS Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad) problem where students used tables to sort out which numbers and shapes that did not belong based on their unique properties. Our follow up session explored fun math riddles and tried a new game from MAV, Nine Person’s Dance which is a counter game based in strategy.
We look forward to a strong finish to the year with our Maths club launch being a huge success. We look forward to expanding our Games Days to other year levels in particular Prep and Grade 2 as our future goals in Galilee to Live, Love and Learn.
