Growing Kindness, Strengthening Safety
Research consistently shows that when schools, families and the broader community work together, bullying rates drop and students feel safer. For example:
- A school-wide, whole-community approach is strongly linked with better outcomes in bullying prevention.
- When parents and caregivers talk about bullying, stay engaged and support their children’s social-connections, kids are less likely to experience or engage in bullying.
Students who feel connected to their school, supported by staff and known by an adult at school are far less likely to feel isolated or invisible.
Because your role is so important, chatting about how the day went, noticing changes in mood, encouraging healthy friendships, matters.
What you can do at home to support our efforts
Here are a few caring ways families can help children feel safe, confident and supported:
- Create a calm, open space to talk: Ask your child about their friendships, how they feel at school, what's going well and what’s challenging. Keep it gentle and ongoing so conversations feel normal, not stressful. UNICEF+1
- Teach and model kindness and empathy: Our children learn from how we treat others. Showing respect, inclusion and kindness at home models the same behaviour we hope to see at school. beyou.edu.au+1
- Help recognise the signs of bullying: Sometimes children don’t talk about being bullied. Watch for changes such as reluctance to go to school, changes in mood or sleep, missing belongings, avoiding online time or friends. UNICEF
- Encourage your child to speak up safely: If they see something troubling, let them know it's okay to talk to a trusted adult. “Standing by” someone, or simply being a friend can make a big difference. StopBullying.gov+1
- Partner with the school: If you have concerns, let us know early. Working together, family, student, school, gives the best chance of a positive outcome. Education+1
Together we build a positive culture
At Wonga Park Primary School, we are deeply committed to creating a safe, kind and inclusive environment where every child feels respected and supported. Our Bullying Prevention Policy guides our proactive approach to stopping bullying before it occurs by building a strong culture of respect, acceptance and inclusion. We implement evidence-based wellbeing programs, participate in initiatives such as Friendology, Respectful Relationships and School Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework, and teach social-emotional skills like resilience, empathy and assertive communication to help students build healthy friendships and resolve conflict positively. Students learn how to recognise bullying, act as upstanders, and seek help when needed, while our Connection Groups foster cross-age friendships and belonging. Working in partnership with families and our wider community, we model kindness, celebrate diversity and ensure that students are encouraged and supported to look out for one another every day. Together, we make Wonga Park a place where everyone can learn, grow and thrive.
With your support, we’ll continue to make Wonga Park Primary School a place where every child thrives.
