Somer's Camp

Somer’s Camp was an amazing experience for 160 students across the LaTrobe Valley. including our two Grade 6's. The week was full of energy, with a timetable packed from morning to night. Every hour brought something new - canoeing, high ropes, archery, team challenges, and more—keeping everyone active and excited for the next adventure.

What really stood out was how many students stepped outside their comfort zones, both physically and mentally. Tasks that seemed overwhelming on day one quickly became moments of pride. Even sharing a room with 19 other students (something I was even nervous about) turned into one of the best parts of camp. By the end of the week, those rooms were full of new friendships and plenty of laughter.

The evenings were just as memorable. Concerts, discos, campfires, and tabloid sports brought everyone together and created a great sense of community. Overall, Somer’s Camp was a week of growth, courage, and fun and I hope it was an experience that stays with our students for a long time.

Staff professional development

We’ve always believed that teachers are learners too. We’ve worked hard to seek out the right resources and connect with experts who can help us strengthen our practice. Recently, learning specialists joined our team meetings to share practical advice on supporting the diverse learning needs across our school. They provided us with ready-to-use strategies for creating proactive, supportive environments, guiding students through “wobbly” moments, and teaching emotional skills in a clear and meaningful way. We explored how helping children understand what’s happening in their brains can empower them to manage change and big feelings more confidently. This professional learning was a valuable reminder that our thoughts have a powerful impact on our behaviour and that even adults benefit from learning how to navigate them. With this shared knowledge, we feel confident in our ability to make positive, lasting changes for all our students.

Showing patience and kindness

As we head into the final week of the year, we are reminding our students and ourselves of the importance of showing patience and kindness. This is a busy and exciting time, but it can also feel a little overwhelming for some. Taking a moment to breathe, speak kindly, and look out for one another makes a big difference in helping everyone finish the year feeling supported and calm. We’re encouraging students to use their coping strategies, be understanding of others, and celebrate the small wins along the way.

Happy Holidays!

We have made it to the end of the year!! I’d like to wish all our families a warm and happy holiday season. Thank you for your support throughout the year, it has made my first year at Cowwarr such a positive and memorable one. I’ve truly loved getting to know our students, working alongside our wonderful community, and being part of everything that makes this school so special. I’m already looking forward to many more great years together. Enjoy the break, relax, and hopefully we all get to enjoy some much-needed warmer weather!
