English
Over the past few weeks in English, our Grade 5 and 6 students have been working hard to refine their writing and language skills, focusing on the key building blocks that make their writing clear, engaging, and effective. One of our major areas of study has been dialogue and and direct speech. Students have been learning how to correctly punctuate speech, use quotation marks, and create realistic conversations between characters. They have also explored how dialogue can be used to reveal personality, build tension, and move a story forward.
We have also focused on paragraphing in order to understand when and why to start a new paragraph and how paragraph breaks help readers follow a story’s flow. Through modelled and guided writing, students have practised organising their ideas logically and using topic sentences to give their writing structure.
Another important focus has been plurals and capitalisation. Students have reviewed the different rules for forming plurals — including some tricky irregular ones — and applied these correctly in their written work. They have also strengthened their understanding of when and why capital letters are used, such as for names, titles, places, and the beginning of sentences.
Across all of these areas, our students have shown steady growth and pride in their writing. Their increasing attention to detail and confidence in applying grammatical conventions are helping them produce polished, purposeful, and entertaining pieces.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, our students have been deepening their understanding of key number operations and exploring the power of data through statistical investigations.
A strong focus has been placed on developing confidence and accuracy in division and subtraction. Students have been using a variety of strategies to solve increasingly complex problems, including partitioning, regrouping, and checking their answers using inverse operations. They have also been encouraged to apply these skills to real-world contexts, strengthening their understanding of how maths helps us solve everyday challenges.
When learning about statistical investigations students have been working through the full inquiry process — from collecting data, to representing it in graphs and tables, to interpreting and analysing their findings to answer specific questions. They have discovered how the way data is displayed can influence the message it sends and have begun to identify and critique statistically informed arguments presented in the media. This has helped them become more critical and thoughtful consumers of information, recognising how statistics can sometimes be used to persuade or mislead an audience.
Economics and Business
We have now begun our Economics and Business studies, where students have been exploring the fascinating world of consumerism and the decisions we make every day about how to use our resources. Our focus has been on understanding the difference between wants and needs, the importance of resources and choices, and the concept of finite resources, learning that not everything we use is endless and that thoughtful decision making helps us use what we have wisely. Students have engaged in lively discussions and real-life examples to understand how consumers, producers, and governments play a role in managing the world’s limited resources.
We have also started using the Money Time program, an interactive platform that introduces students to essential financial literacy skills. Through this program, students have been learning about earning and saving money and interest, as well as how to make smart financial decisions. They have enjoyed exploring how different jobs earn different incomes and how saving a little regularly can grow over time through interest.
These lessons have encouraged students to think critically about how money and resources are connected to the choices we make every day, both as individuals and as a community. Our students have shown great enthusiasm in developing their understanding of how economics impacts their world and the importance of being informed, responsible consumers.
