Year 1 students try violins and cellos!

Year 1 students try violins and cellos!

This week in Music, 1AJ and 1L were visited by Sean (6P – violin) and Ross (6H – cello); and 1G was visited by Charlie (6R – violin) and Daniel (6R – violin). 1R will have a visit next week.

The Year 6 students talked about and demonstrated how their instruments make sound. They played short pieces for the Year 1 students to recognise and talked about their experiences learning a string instrument at IPS.

At IPS we are lucky to have a String Program. The main entry point is the Start Up Strings class which is primarily aimed at Year 2 students. They learn violin or cello through two group lessons per week in Semester 1 and then one group lesson and one individual lesson per week in Semester 2. One student each year may learn bass and that student starts with one individual lesson per week and then joins the Start Up Strings class at the earliest appropriate time.

After Start Up Strings, students move into Corelli Strings and then Orchestra. There are currently over 120 students in the IPS String Program.

If your child will be in Year 2 in 2026 and is interested in joining the Start Up Strings program, please email our String Co-ordinator, Margaret.butcher@education.vic.gov.au or return the flyer your child received in class to your class teacher or the office.
