Checking In With Your Kids: A Parent's Guide
As we navigate the ups and downs of life, it's essential to create moments to connect with our children. Checking in regularly not only strengthens our bond but also provides an opportunity to support their emotional wellbeing. Here are a few tips to help you check in effectively:
Create Space for Conversation: Find a quiet moment where you can talk without distractions. This could be during a car ride, at dinner, or before bedtime.
Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of "How was your day?" try asking questions like "What was the best part of your day?" or "Is there anything on your mind that you'd like to talk about?"
Listen Actively: Give your child your full attention. Listen without interrupting or offering immediate solutions. Sometimes, they just need to be heard.
Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge their emotions, even if you don't fully understand. Let them know it's okay to feel the way they do.
Share Your Own Experiences: Sometimes, sharing a similar experience from your past can help them feel understood and less alone.
Bible Verse for Reflection:
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding." - Proverbs 3:5
This verse reminds us of the importance of trust and openness in our relationships, including those with our children.
