Year 9 & 10 Science and Engineering Challenge
On Monday 11th August, a group of Year 9 and 10 students participated in the South West District Science and Engineering Challenge at Deakin University. They competed against a few other schools from the South West in a variety of different challenges which all covered a STEM theme.
Our students participated with enthusiasm and respect in all events. Coming into the event there was a sense that we had gotten to the finals for the last three years, this of course added to the excitement. At the half time break we were trailing by a slim margin, but in the final stretch we took the lead and were able to win the day. For the fourth straight year our little school have punched above their weight and gotten into another state final. Congratulations to the team.
As an extra this year, a few teachers from across the different schools were able to participate in the bridge building challenge but they were only given half the time, it was a great opportunity to have a go for the for the first time after watching for so many years. The teachers collaborated well and were able to successfully put a bridge together in the short time, which I am also glad to say beat the best student bridge by a very slim 8 points. A lot of fun was had by staff and students.

Warrnambool & Moyne Young Business Leaders Program
On August 7th, Year 10 students Ben B and David M participated in the Warrnambool & Moyne Young Business Leaders Program. Here they were fortunate enough to gain a valuable insight into the value and potential of starting a small business as a teenager. They were hosted by BOP Industries, an inspiring company responsible for running small business programs all around Australia. It was an incredible day where they gained a new insight into business management.

Year 9 & VCE Melbourne Excursion
On Friday 8th August, the Year 9 class along with the VCE PE students and VCE VM students travelled down to Melbourne to spend time with two organisations: the Richmond Football Club/Swinburne Uni and the Epworth Hospital.
Dean Dwyer from the Neil Porter Legacy joined us as we spent time watching the senior mens Richmond football team train before making our way to Church St where info and gym sessions were undertaken.
After a quick bite to eat we walked to the Epworth Hospital where we were spoilt with a beautiful afternoon tea, presentation and tours. This was an extremely valuable experience for our students and a big thank you goes out to the Richmond FC, Epworth Hospital and the Neil Porter Legacy for making the day happen.

Year 8
Year 8 made carbonara this week. We talked about how there are many different ways to make carbonara, all equally delicious, and that it’s worth experimenting with different variations using ingredients from the fridge or pantry.
Year 10
This week our Year 10 students practiced making Gyozas. Whilst the filling was easy, the folding was a good challenge for the students. This particular plating up below by Ben B was fantastic!
