As part of VCE-Vocational Major, students undertake a Civics Numeracy topic within Numeracy and a community project within Personal Development Skills. Ms Zammit and I decided to combine forces and undertake a whole-school fundraiser. Students were required to research and report on different forms of fundraising, choose an organisation they were passionate about, and research and advertise their chosen organisation. The Warrandyte community was surveyed, resulting in Farm Angels being chosen as the organisation we raised funds for.
Students then investigated all aspects of putting the event together, including creating a budget, liaising with key personnel in the school, holding team meetings, promoting and publicising the event, and making decisions in collaboration with others. Risk assessments and timelines were also developed to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Students also sought donations from local businesses and were thrilled with the generous support from Shane and the team at Warrandyte Quality Meats and Preston and the team at Biddick's Bakery. As a result of the generous donations from our donors, parents, and guardians, we were able to raise close to $600, an absolutely amazing amount. All proceeds will be donated to Farm Angels to support our Aussie farmers who are going through tough times. A big thank you to everyone who played a role in making this event happen. Well done to the Year 12 VM students for coming together for this special fundraiser.
As the year 12 VM's approach the end of their high school era, I'd like to give them a shout out and congratulations on their achievements. These included official qualifications in areas such as First Aid, Responsible Service of Alcohol, Food Handling, White Card, Financial Literacy and Barista.
They have also already (or will soon) have achieved the following vocational certificates:
What amazing achievements and great way to enter the world of work. Also worth a special note - most of our Year 11 and 12 VM students are about to complete their Certificate II in Public Safety (Firefighting Operations). Students are not being trained as front line fire fighters, but rather in a range of classroom based and practical scenarios that will give them the skill, knowledge and confidence to be able to adapt and utilise what they have learnt in their chosen workplace, around their home and community.
Not only do VM students undertake VET, but this is also a valid VCE subject that many of our students undertake as part of their VCE. I will outline some of these achievements in the next addition of the Gang Gang!
Congratulations to our Year 9's for completing this important process, which included one on one interviews with Morrisby counsellors this term. The Department of Education gives student free access to the Morrisby online career education tool.
Morrisby helps students make informed choices for senior secondary school and beyond by exploring their strengths, interests and career opportunities.
Year 9's it's time to start thinking about what you might do next year! Work Experience week may be 3 terms away, but it is never too soon to explore options and opportunities to make this a worthwhile experience! The current Year 10's did some amazing things and received great feedback from their employers and visiting staff.
It won't be long until our Year 12's sit their final exams and head off into the big wide world. Well done to those who have already completed their VTAC preferences, started looking for (or are continuing with) apprenticeships and traineeships and/or planning an important Gap Year. Good luck and best wishes for whichever path you follow.
